I watched the last day of the 5th Ashes match recently.Many close ups of the faces of both teams.Ashes cricket does fry the mind,as does most cricket,score 250 first innings out for 2 in the second.It is a game that brings you down so quickly,add to that the competition for places and one can see why the mental difficulties occur. Always admired cricketers for their tough mental attitude to keep playing.Two other sportsman I admired and always wanted their mindset are Tiger Woods and David Beckham.

In his case he can’t so he leaves the heat of social media. If that works for him, fine. His choice. Smart move. Better that than breaking down.
For some negative comments pushes them down, for others it drives them on. Takes all sorts.

Many people have always had an opinion on everything. That’s not new. What is new is that social media, media in general allows people to know what is happening in the world and to express it on a wider scale rather than to mates down the pub. Opinions in the bar went on 50 years ago, Want an off button? Heading for disappointment. Deal with it or hide from it. The choice we have. As an aside, people need to understand the positive benefits of negative feelings including how they can improve mental health. A surprising view? To dismiss the concept that negative thoughts don’t exist is nonsense and dangerous. We all have them, even WatfordO. Or are you going to say you never have them. Of course you do. We all do. Having negative thoughts and feelings is not the issue. They are part of life for everyone . Negative thoughts and feelings happen. The issue is how we deal with them. If allowed to go unchecked they can be harmful both physically and mentally. Ignoring that they exist is dangerous
We need to recognise we all have negative thoughts and feelings and we all need to recognise others too have them. We need to learn how to deal with them within ourselves and just as importantly we need to understand and be tolerant of others who may well be mentally is a very dark place. You can’t see it like a broken leg, but it’s there.
When you have experienced waking up in the morning and wishing you hadn’t, then you start to understand just how tough being positive can be. Yet those around you cannot see it. Your hope is that you are surrounded by people who care enough to try and understand and with enough compassion to help you through it. And that is a long, hard journey and sadly some don’t make it.
So people who continually waffle on about positivity just don’t understand the reality. Those who say “pull yourself together”, “snap out of it” just have no idea of how dark those dark places can be.
So please, I beg you, try to understand negativity. Try to understand what your colleague, next door neighbour or friend may be going through in the mind. Believe me, waffling on about the joys and benefits of positivity don’t help, that’s understood, but for some it’s a place they may never reach.
As for the cricketer, I said it was a smart move. He recognised a trigger and dealt with it. He lives in a world where this stuff happens so his choice is deal with it or get out before it goes too far. That is a fact of his life. A trigger for him may not be for others.
Learn about it. It’s something I would not wish on anybody.

This is a serious topic, one that affects lives, one that costs lives. The term grow up has never been more apt. I kindly suggest you too do some research. The last few years this has become even more serious.

I find it quite easy to take it or leave it. Whether that's Orient, work, family, whatever. I get my comfort and balance from many places. If one isn't working I'll move to another. For others they just can't leave it though and need the final word.

Depression is an entirely different thing. People in the workplace suffer too. In fact when you look at the stats over the past few years it’s massively likely that even in a small workplace someone will be suffering some sort of mental illness. It can affect productivity, absence and even safety. It’s a subject that informed employers need to aware of more and more. A duty of care to our employees. But you need to be aware. i say yet again and this will be my last post on the subject. If you are a modern employer and you care for the productivity of your business and importantly the well being of the people who are generating your profits do some research. I’m not asking or expecting you to take my word for it. Look elsewhere. Up to you of course. Take care.
