I've just seen on transfermarket that Ruel is currently valued at €450k (almost £400k). That's almost double what he was worth at the start of the season, despite his contract being up this summer. If someone offered us that in January, would you take it?

Isn’t Ruel our top scorer ,so selling our top scorer makes perfect sense !!! Over 25% of goals scored and tied for second in assists. I think this is reflected in the Transfermarkt evaluation number. If he’s sold there would be the actual fee and the sell on. This is a good position to be in for the club but it seems risky to let go of a person who leads the team in goals. If a transfer is actually in the works, and somehow that fact is reflected in the valuation jump with Transfermarkt, maybe something is in the works with a known quantity like, I don’t know, QPR’s number 11.

Will he ever start putting away the easy chances? He should be in double figures and then it wouldn’t be a discussion. Torn on this one

Sign him up for another two years, get him to 15 goals for the season, then sell him in the summer for £600k

Keep, and offer him a new contract. Much too risky at the moment (especially for us) to let a goalscorer/goal assist player go.
It could be a 'you don't know what you've got until it's gone' down the line, this season anyway.
Paul Smyth is either starting or coming on as a sub at around 60/70 mins for QPR, and considering where they are at the mo I don't think they'll let him go.

There's been so much negativity about Ruel it's getting beyond a joke. Not particularly on this thread, but mainly what I've been listening to on the podcasts about how he don't score enough.
Ruel is 23. He's playing at the 3rd tier of English football for the first time in his life, pretty much spearheading it on his own, and we're all being over-critical of him.
I had a look at some stats earlier, but the fact is that at 23 years old Ruel has played 82 games for us and scored 38 goals in the league. I haven't verified them, but I can imagine most of those were from the bench too. That is a decent return.
2019/2020 Season (20 years old) - Scores 5 goals in his first season in League Two 2020/2021 Season (21 years old) - Scores 1 goal in 2021/2022 Season (22 years old) - Scores 9 goals in his third season in League Two 2022/2023 Season (23 years old) - Scores 9 goals in his fourth season in League Two 2023/2024 Season (23/24 years old) - Scores 7 by goals by Christmas in his first season in League One
That is progression when you consider that some managers fancy him and some don't.
By comparison: As a 23-year-old Alfie May hadn't played in the Football League but was tucking the goals away for Hythe Town. After his big move to Doncaster as a 24-year-old he spent three years accumulating 10 goals in 92 games at League One level. Before dropping down to League Two for a few years.
Colby Bishop at 23 was playing for Leamington.
Sam Hoskins at 23 had scored 6 career goals in 71 games across 3 different clubs.
We have a real talent on our hands in Ruel. We keep, we nurture. He will only get better. And let's be honest, he's been starved of service and played in many positions this season already.

Well there goes that theory as to Paul Smyth.

A reasoned argument backed up with stat information and not a subjective opinion on the players ability and goal tally. What I found interesting about Alfie May in your text is that he was transferred to Doncaster from Hythe Town in Kent. Was that through Doncaster's scouting system or by an Agent offering him to a league club. Or possibly the Manager at the time at Hythe having a contact at Doncaster? This then leads onto why he was not picked up by Gillingham's or Charlton's scouting system.

Well there goes that theory as to Paul Smyth. I personally wouldn't want him back either. He was a bloody good player for us and one that had me off my seat numerous times and I enjoyed watching him and helping us win the league. It might be shortsighted on my behalf but he disrespected our club when he left and for me that leaves a sour taste so he can go do one as far as I'm concerned.

In terms of the poll I voted no despite saying last week he needs to be benched as a rest may do him good. However, the job he did against Charlton was very good.
The interesting point after seeing twice as many say yes they would sell him for £400k, the question is would the club be interested at that level? I'd say they probably would as well. I think his agent would love him to go as when he signed a new contract there was a video he produced singing his praises as part of a selling initiative from the agent, so we must be mindful to not lose him for buttons.

Ruel was our joint top scorer last season, and is our top scorer so far this year. Given our struggles to score goals this year, selling the guy that’s the best at doing it that we currently have doesn’t make sense to me.
Having said that, $400k is good money for someone out of contract at the end of the season who could leave for free. I guess it depends on what interest is out there and the likelihood of him signing any new deal offered.

I know the website and it's randomly odd figures for transfer fees but even £400k in my opinion is a pittance.
I'm sure there are some but I'd like someone to name another 23/24 year old who has scored 40 EFL career goals so far and is available for anywhere near £400k.

I think you are likely right about website. There have been salary totals listed online in the last few days for total salaries for League One teams that list the total salary cost for Leyton Orient at 3.5 million for the season. Clickbait or engagement bait no doubt.
