I’m a no in the poll, but my big concern is have we put a new contract in front of him and is he interested in resigning or not? Last season we had four players who all kept us waiting and in Smyths case left us. I know it’s tough for us as a small club to commit to longer contracts, but 2 years does leave us in a weaker position and potentially more likely to sell in the last year of a contract, of an improved player.

Personally I like him. Okay he may miss some chances but he does score often when least expected. As a team we don't create too many chances and I think therefore it's unfair to expect a lot of goals from any of the strikers. Often Ruel creates space for others. He is still learning other skills of the game and does more for the team than he is given credit for.

I wonder if Ruel has read any of this? What would he make of it?

I wonder if Ruel has read any of this? What would he make of it? Personally I don't think he will take much notice. He should now be realising his worth and if he has an Agent, the Agent will be assessing the worth of his Client, if there has been any interest in the player from other clubs. No doubt he will contacting the O's management of any developments who will take it from there.

This morning it was 2 to 1 for the yes vote, now there is just one vote in it. Anymore for No? Or Yes?

This morning it was 2 to 1 for the yes vote, now there is just one vote in it. Anymore for No? Or Yes? Awkward one, do I want him to stay and sign an extended contract for the Os....then YES. Then again, we could turn down a good fee for him in January and then he could leave on a free at the end of the season !! Lastly I have a hunch that Peterborough may be interested in signing him ?

There's been so much negativity about Ruel it's getting beyond a joke. Not particularly on this thread, but mainly what I've been listening to on the podcasts about how he don't score enough. Ruel is 23. He's playing at the 3rd tier of English football for the first time in his life, pretty much spearheading it on his own, and we're all being over-critical of him. I had a look at some stats earlier, but the fact is that at 23 years old Ruel has played 82 games for us and scored 38 goals in the league. I haven't verified them, but I can imagine most of those were from the bench too. That is a decent return. 2019/2020 Season (20 years old) - Scores 5 goals in his first season in League Two 2020/2021 Season (21 years old) - Scores 1 goal in 2021/2022 Season (22 years old) - Scores 9 goals in his third season in League Two 2022/2023 Season (23 years old) - Scores 9 goals in his fourth season in League Two 2023/2024 Season (23/24 years old) - Scores 7 by goals by Christmas in his first season in League One That is progression when you consider that some managers fancy him and some don't. By comparison:As a 23-year-old Alfie May hadn't played in the Football League but was tucking the goals away for Hythe Town. After his big move to Doncaster as a 24-year-old he spent three years accumulating 10 goals in 92 games at League One level. Before dropping down to League Two for a few years. Colby Bishop at 23 was playing for Leamington. Sam Hoskins at 23 had scored 6 career goals in 71 games across 3 different clubs. We have a real talent on our hands in Ruel. We keep, we nurture. He will only get better. And let's be honest, he's been starved of service and played in many positions this season already.Far too much emphasis put on age and too little on ability and potential. Wayne Rooney scored a champions league hat trick at some stupid young age having made his league debut at 16. Tony Book of Man City didn’t do much until he made it at 30. Loads of examples out there to show age often means nothing. Our own Paul Went, with whom I played schoolboy football with, made his Orient debut at 15. Soteriou is 23. So what! Sotiriou has a tremendous amount of potential and has shown it since he started. Great promise as to the great player he could be. But only shows it in patches and this season is no different. Has a great spell, followed by not much, which is where he is right now. But £400k? Let’s wait and see if he can become the player we hope he can be. Keep, offer a new contract.

I would certainly want to keep him for the rest of this season. I know there's an argument that he should have more goals. But the hard truth is,at the moment purely in terms of finding the net,he is the best we have.In a goals per pitch time ratio I'm guessing Shaq comes out on top,but he is a young man, who also isn't our player, still finding his feet in first team football.
If we ship Ruel out now, there's no guarantee coming with a replacement, if one even comes in..So that finds us relying on Drinan and Pigott. Personally I'd stick for now.
Happy New Year..and up the O's

I've always been a fan of Soti and would hate it if he left. I'm sure there's more to come from him.
If there's one player above all I want to do well for us, it's him.

According to reports there's been changes at board level both Canadian Directors have resigned. Peterborough Chairman has assumed total control. They will have to sell Ronnie Edwards and Clarke Harris to clear a reported 6 million Debt. If these transfers happen they may have the cash to buy. Ithink there will be Championship level clubs interested imo.

I think you miss the point on this one. We know he isn't Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Messi or Ronaldo. I've used comparative players that have been mentioned on here as players we should be signing, Richie has mentioned as notable and those in the top scorers of the league. It's also to show progression and potential. Giving players an opportunity.

It's also to show progression and potential. Giving players an opportunity. I appreciate he is not Foden etc. But it’s relative. players at all level develop /peak at different ages. I just chose a couple off the top of my head but I’ve little doubt the same situation exists at all levels in football where they are playing with and against others of a similar level. He is not Rooney, but he iis not playing against top class international defenders either. I’m referring to development by age rather than skills. My point being age is not always the key point. Progression or progress. Ruel is an infuriating player. Glimpses of real class and quality and periods of invisibility. Which is why the sell/keep question is a very good one. He could finally become the player we believe he has the potential for. Equally he may not progress much more than now. Keeping him is worth a punt, he can still hit the heights, hope he does. Right now and with a fully fit squad I’d struggle to see him making the starting line up.. This season he has shown signs of progress but has dropped off. But he has a decent goals per game ratio. The near 50/50 vote is a fair reflection of how people see him.

Mungo has it spot on. Again. Criticism of Ruel is counter productive and inaccurate. Implying he isnt any good by comparing him to a younger Wayne Rooney is, well, just a bit insane?

From a business angle, yes, but from a football angle no way would i take any fee for Ruel.
He works his socks off, runs all day, scores goals, and is vital to the team
I hope he signs a new contract for us in the summer

I’ve never been a huge fan of Sotiriou although I will concede he often seems to be played in role(s) that doesn’t suit his strengths. Personally I would say the whole issue is a bit of a moot point as the chances of actually getting £400k for him from another club is highly unlikely to happen.

Not comparing him skill-wise with top players, of course not, that would be unfair, just highlighting age is not the be all and end all when developing a career in football. Which it is not. Just a part. Evidence. I mentioned players including Paul Went who stated his playing career with us at 15 by way of example. Mentioned him because I played with him and for years lived a few doors away from his parents. And Tony Book who after a very modest career in the lower leagues hit the big time at 30. Maybe a player before your time but I remember it well. Worth a read. Big news back in the day. At 30 he made his first ever EFL appearance and at 32 hit the first division (Prem) where he made 200+ appearances and won honours with Manchester City. Two examples of the extreme ends of the age scale highlighting my point. To quote Sir Matt Busby “If you’re good enough you’re old enough”. Something that applies at all tiers of the game. Went was good enough at 15, Book at 30. Sir Matts opinion is good enough for me. age of course is not experience and that has to be earned irrespective of ability. As a PS, just looked up that quote, a copy of which is still displayed within Old Trafford apparently.
