Braintree win 3-4 at Worthing and promoted to National League. It was good entertainment to watch on TV and only just finished after extra time. Entertaining but not a great deal of talent although the commentators tried to talk it up.
Didn't Braintree beat us when we were in the National league or was that a friendly?

We smashed them by 5 or 6 at their place and we played out the most boring draw last game of the season when we lifted the title.

Won 5-1 away then like you said, then at home one of the most boring draw(0-0) ever in world football 😂

Thanks mrb and thor . I think you are both right. As I remember i went to Braintree when Ian Hendon was our manager and I am sure we lost, so I think it was a friendly match. I remember Hendon arrived and I was with Julian the taxi driver, later fork man, who used to be on the forum. Hendon never watched much of the game but was on the phone behind our stand mist of the time and then left before the end in a nice Porsche with personal number plate. Yup we have lost there on a pre season friendly or two

I think the club only charged a quid for it that day. The match itself was like watching paint dry, but it was worth it for the scenes afterwards.

I enjoyed the match and thought it very exciting. So pleased with the result as two of my young relatives support Braintree and I thought I saw one in the crowd shots. Also Braintree are an Essex team,it helped with the mood of Essex losing in two days to Somerset. If Essex do not win the county championship,it would please me if Somerset won it.

Up the Somerset!! Even though life started out in Hackney for me, I've supported Somerset since Botham, Richard, Garner etc. I won't be changing teams even though we've not had too much to celebrate down the years!

Not a glory hunter Thor surely, but yes it is about time Somerset won the County Championship before cricket becomes a white ball franchise(and there are plans)so it is not far off.

The standard of the semi pro game has moved on massively in recent years and will continue to improve as better coaching methods filter down and more of them become involved in the game.

Technical skills and fitness levels I believe continue to thrive down the pyramid. But I believe that bye-and-large there will always be a so to speak glass ceiling. The magic that separates the gifted amateur from the professional. I once shared the same pitch as an older ex-pro (league 1 level) in an inter-company game. He was fat and forty but whilst the rest of us charged around like idiots he seemed to have all the time in the world. Control, vision, passing, holding. It was a pleasure to watch first hand. The difference between him and the young guns was night and day. No amount of coaching would ever get me to that level. I’m sure that applies to many. But we can all improve, up to a point. But only the best make it even to the National League.

You never lose it as such, just I'm not as fast as I was, still very quick but not like I was and I can't run as hard for the full 90 mins. Whereas a youngster will be quicker than me I'd use my head to see it before he even realises it. That's what your fat mate had / has.

I’ll be honest Thor and why today I get infuriated by players who don’t give their all. Jealousy. As a kid all I ever wanted to be was a footballer. Love the game, couldn’t get enough. Never happier than when kicking a ball. Even now just holding a football still has that magic. But unlike some, like you, you never lose that special something, I never had that special something to lose. Try as I did and I did try, I was never going to be good enough. So I get angry when I see talented players throw away something that I craved for, for many years.

He has the quality to play in the championship, but he never seems bothered. If a player goes past him for example he never busts a gut to cover the person who come to cover him. If we are caught on the break he bimbles back, never trying more than a jog. To me has has good qualities, if he put the graft with that he'd be gone in a flash and in my opinion it's what's holding him back from getting to the championship.
