With Rob Hunt released and RW saying that he is on the look out for an athletic attacking wing back to replace him we could do a lot worse than taking a look at Nicky Cadden who has just been released by Barnsley. Interesting call. Decent experience and record. Attacking wing back according to Wiki. A Brophy type player and chips in with a few goals. At 27 combines solid experience with age. A decent player at our level.

Apparently Charlton are in for Mitchell from Millwall to help solve their centre half problem.

Hopefully the latter where it’s possible to do so.👍

Interesting point osoldguy, but surely in the overall summary of things those few weeks could be petty cash.

I like the idea of a Brophy style player and the age.Perhaps location could be a problem. Some gems are available if we choose right or maybe train on to our style of play.Very important for RW.

If we want the real thing, Brophy himself is out of contract with Cambridge Utd but has been offered a new deal by them.

I liked Brophy, he seemed to be good at everything except making his wing play actually count. I liked him as a full back but he struggled against the Ariel bombardment teams. Wellens could get good service from him probably.

When we played Cambridge Brophy looked poor. We need attacking full backs comfortable at the top end of this league/ championship quality, if we are building a team for the top 6.

He did indeed, lacking confidence and seemed to know his old team (even with so many key injuries) outgunned his current team. He really didn't want to be out there.

Do we need Championship quality players? When in league 2, the drive to get league 1 players made sense, promotion a real possibility. I don't believe next season promotion is likely so players signed now on a two year deal will be at the end of contract should we go up season after next. Better we sign solid league 1 players to ensure we continue to consolidate whilst seeking out quality younger players and putting the best on a 3 year deal. Next seasons July window is the time to look for the Championship quality players. Take us up and consolidate. Now is too soon. We need to be patient. Not being pessimistic but next season is going to be tough and I don’t see promotion as a priority. Solid experience at league 1 level for now. Let’s become a solid league 1 side first. Done well so far so let’s keep that momentum going.

It’d be good for me if we had a friendly against my local club Tonbridge Angels

We are already a solid league 1 side, as we’ve replaced most of our league 2 quality players. Onwards and upwards for me.

If, despite our efforts, we remain a mid table League 1 outfit, then so be it, but it’s not an objective I would expect Wellens ( or many fans ) to endorse tbh.👍

I want us to have the best players we can afford. That we can afford! It’s the championship quality point I’m questioning. championship quality players, even if we can attract them, come at a huge cost so it’s the old debate of fewer, better, players or a solid squad of good players. It’s the latter I’m suggesting this season is the prudent option. This is not negatively, but reality. One good season doesn’t mean consolidation. Consolidation isn’t negative it’s a gradual move to improvement within the limitations we currently have. We’ve some decent talent already but I don’t really see many of the Championship quality yet. TBH I can’t see us being in a position to even challenge for the better players, too many bigger, richer clubs to compete with. So a solid league 1 side with an influx of young talent on 3 year deals is the best way to go.
