Looking to book trains and hotel. Absolutely staggered at the cost of hotels in Edinburgh. Ridiculous. Mrs doh and I looking to have a few days up there, getting to the game as part of the trip. Will cost us over a grand in total. At that’s at a Premier Inn. I’ll pass I’m afraid. Can get a week in the sun for not much more.

From what I gather many of those going up are staying outside of Edinburgh Using trains, was looking in the central area. Close to Waverley station. Silly money. Then started to look further afield, still expensive. Then looked at flying, Stanstead and Luton, long drive to the airport then hiring a car in Edinburgh so could stay a distance away from the centre to get cheaper hotels. Then decided it’s too much hassle and gave up. But I did try. Did fleetingly consider driving. 400 miles and we can share the driving. Done it before in a company car but don’t fancy putting that much mileage on mine.

Just spent a week just outside Edinburgh at Linlithgow, easy 20 min train journey to Waverley. Nice town with plenty of drink and food establishments. Dunfermline is also worth considering and accommodation will be cheaper there too. Went by train from Peterborough, it was about 300 quid for us both on an advance ticket with old farts railcards and that was first class. Two together card is worth getting for 30 quid, easily save that on one journey. Trains in Scotland are good value, currently off peak fares available all day. We went to Glasgow and also looked round the the Royal Yacht at Leith.

We went to Glasgow and also looked round the the Royal Yacht at Leith. Thanks for the info. We both have Seniors railcards. Train fares, advanced, with discounts ranged from £110 each to £140 each depending on changes and convenience of times. Where we live we need to travel into London and get a tube before the long haul. 7 hours but that’s OK. Say £250 for the journey including taxis to/from our local station. Acceptable. But once there we want to see Edinburgh. Have worked in Edinburgh, Corstorphne, visited as a tourist when Mrs doh did the Moonwalk marathon a few years back, we want to enjoy the city, its sights, the game and the restaurants, not the outskirts and definitely not a train ride late at night. Not our thing anymore. We want the tourist bit then a walk back to our hotel. £500+ for two nights at a Premier inn and they were amongst the cheapest of those hotels we were looking at. The majority in the £600 region. The food, entertainment, game. £1k without breaking into a sweat. Lovely city and nice people based on those I worked with. But £1k+ for a short stay, just not value for money for me. Shame as I fancied the game.

Used to fly to Edinburgh from Southampton with Flybe for work every month or so. Easy to get to for us and a few years back went to Edinburgh for a moonwalk with Mrs doh. But most flights now are Luton and Stanstead. 2 hours to get to the terminal for us plus parking. Then hanging around for the flight. Cheaper but not easy. And of course got to travel to/from the airport at the other end. Flights on the date we want from Southampton circa £350 each, poor flight times too. Over £400 each for sensible times.

I looked at it but it was too expensive. So I decided a night in, deep frying a pizza with deep fried Mars bar for dessert, all washed down with a bottle of Buckfast, would suffice.

Accommodation aside did you look at Lumo trains from Kings Cross Dread to think how much a hotel will be with the Ms Swift gig at Murrayfield. We had been to Edinburgh before and stayed in the centre, but this time wanted a base to visit other places over the week.

Doh, why don’t you fly from Bournemouth. £70 return flying up Thursday back on Sunday, plus cost of your bag, it is with Ryanair after all.

Hearts fan here - delighted that the clubs have agreed this friendly.
I visited your great club a few years back and received an amazing welcome from you all in the supporters bar, I’m sure you’ll all receive the same welcome up in Edinburgh.
Hopefully Hearts play it sensible and ensure both sets of supporters can mingle. We usually put up metal shutters in the Roseburn stand to ensure away supporters can’t get to the home end but would be a shame on this occasion as it would prevent you from taking in the memorial garden on the corner of the Roseburn and Wheatfield stands.
If any of you guys have any questions at all I’m more than happy to help, and hopefully see a few of you for a beer in Edinburgh.

Hopefully, the knuckle dragging tiny minority of our fans won't 'get' the raison d'etre of this event and thus not bother to travel. This isn't a game of football per se, it's an event to celebrate and appreciate what those people did over 100 years ago. Such a shame it had to be done all over again about 20 years later.

We’ve all got them, we certainly have our fair share. But you’re right, this is more than a friendly, and I hope both sets of fans embrace it for what it is. And it’s such a shame about accommodation costs. Edinburgh is so expensive now and certainly on a par with London when it comes to the hospitality industry. Echo the sentiments of others, have a look outside of the city, Edinburgh is so well connected with trains running til late to most places.
