Atkinson 103 off 103 balls at Lords vs Sri-Lanka. Following Roots ton. 6th fastest. Maiden century in first class cricket achieved in a test match at Lords. Dont get much better. Not hanging around, 107 off 105. After a poor start England are motoring, run rate 4.22. Potts at the other end did a fine job. 21 off 43 before being caught behind.
Good watch.

Root will surely pass Cook for runs scored in this series? I also think he can surpass Tendulker too.

Must admit, cricket on sky sport is damn good. So much explanation, with graphics and freeze frame in support, on bowling techniques and even batters position at the crease. A real insight into what goes on in test cricket and just how subtle some of the changes made are. Fascinating stuff.
As an aside Sri-Lanka making hard work of their innings at 109-6 still 317 behind.

Have you ever considered following England in an away series dohnut.A chap who sits a few seats away from me in the East Stand is a MCC member and follows the home and away.My dream of seeing an Ashes test in Australia has long gone despite having a relative to stay with in Gold Coast.

Saw England at the WACA good few years ago (we lost). Temperatures above 40c. Stuart Broad got ripped apart by the fans for some off-field incident. Then got injured. Disgusted by the Aussie fans for their joy at his injury. Did a tour of the WACA, crap ground in truth and no longer used for tests I think. Done the tour of the MCG but not seen cricket there, only Aussie rules football. Walked on the turf at both, not the square of course. Im sure I’ll see another game in Perth at some point, my son lives there. And football at Perth Glory again.

Root is now officially the highest run scorer in English history after back to back tons. Well done Joe. Been absolutely superb in this game. Gutted he overtook Essex man Cook but can’t take anything away from him. Within striking distance of others too and at his age has the opportunity to overtake Tendulkar. Now that would be something really special. Go Root 66 Should go 2-0 in the current series. An enjoyable watch only interrupted by watching football.

India next year,I do hope all cricket is played with the kookaburra ball to get used to the ball for the Ashes tour.If we play well against the tourists with said ball we have a much better(though very slim)chance of getting our urn back and my urn once again can claim the coveted place on my unit.I can shoot through in peace if we have the Ashes. Is there a sport that is contested so hard for such a small but mighty trophy. Those ladies who posted the obituary and gave us the urn deserve a trophy in their honour to be played for during an Ashes contest at any venue home or away.Changing the venue at every series.

Watching Lancashire vs Sussex, T20 quarter final. People around the ground in hospitality areas, sitting in reclining chairs, drinking wine on a nice evening. Jealous! Decent crowd as well around the ground and other on their balcony watching for free.
Wonderful to see a crowd with people of all ages enjoying a really good game.

Can’t really compare Cook and Root, two different positions. Statistically I believe Cook is the leading opening batsman in test cricket. Root has the opportunity to overtake Tendulkar and become the finest middle order batsman in the modern game. Of course Bradman as a No 3 has got to be the greatest batsman of all time surely, just for his test match average.

Genuine comparison is not possible. Tables don’t tell the full story but it’s the closest we have for comparison purposes. Flawed as it is. Essex has been blessed with some fine players and England Captains. Always wonder if Gooch would have been even higher but from memory the Kerry Packer stuff interfered. Not hopeful about seeing a lot of cricket in the third test.

Read in the DT today that cricket is the second most watched sport worldwide after football. Given the countries in which it is played that doesn’t surprise me. Hugely popular sport and importantly can be played with simple makeshift equipment on any open ground or beach. It’s a great sport.

It was an article comment, the article was by the England captain Ben Stokes saying how we need to treasure Test Cricket as the most important aspect of the game. Many comments expressing how it has been pushed down so late in the short cricket calendar to let the wretched 100 have dominion throughout the best month/s of the season. Many complained of the slow over rate and not even getting the full 90 overs due to the rapidly fading light at this time of year. Also the cost and three Tests being played in London. The London issue I can understand the ECB wanting Tests here because of the larger crowds and charges.
