The latest ComputerActive recommends, if you have £180 to spare is the Epson EcoTank ET-2830 it also copies and scans. Or the Epson EcoTank ET-1810 £20 cheaper and enough ink for 4500 mono and 7500 colour pages. Both a bit over the top for me.

The ink system is great. None of this messing about with cartridge refills just a big bottle of ink per colour and they last forever with reasonable use. Decent photo quality too.

I have an Epson printer / scanner XP-442. Its around 6 years old, works well and very reliable and I always get compatible replacement cartridges, often buy them on ebay, fraction of the price and work just as well. Set of 4 XL Epson cartridges around £60, compatible price for 4 around £8

I think it may be cheaper to buy a laser printer. Higher initial purchase price but no ink cartridges
The ink printers are a rip off with a low capital purchase and outrageous ink after
The alternative to consider abandoning a printer in your home and finding a commercial printers and download onto a stick and use the shop - I do that now

There's always something, no matter which printer, no matter what company

I have a HPDeskjet 2700 series which I think cost me under 60 quid and it scans. HP's cheapest ink deal is 2 quid a month. Some reviews said it was a bit slow but not for me. Others reckon the print quality was average but I can't say I've noticed.

Low cost printers, high cost inks is common. That’s exactly why I moved to the printer I said above. It reverses that trend. The printers are more expensive but the ink system is very cheap. (Printer manufacturers were losing out to the compatible inks markets so wanted to maximise hardware profit whilst screwing the compatible ink market) Buying a bottle to refill tanks rather than replace cartridges. Based on my use, a colour cartridge would last 4 months, less for some colours. I used compatible. 18 months on I’ve only had to refill the black tank (newer models have a bigger black ink tank) the other 3 tanks are still over 50%. The sheer convenience of not messing about with cartridges, often recycled too, is huge. But people’s needs differ. Of course it all depends on the use. Black only, duplex, photo quality, up A3, volumes and so on. I use colour and do photo printing, great quality. Best printer I’ve owned. No jams, great colour, no gummed up printer heads. Just switch on and go. I’ll probably need to refill the colour tanks sometime in 2026. Occasional software updates, that’s it.

Not so if you buy compatible ink cartridges as I do, a fraction of the price of the manufacturers ones last just as long and print quality every bit as good. Compatible cartridges are so much better now than they were years ago. I often print my own glossy colour photos on my Epson XP-442 printer/scanner.

Try using compatable cartrisges, so much cheaper and most companies refund if you get a problem. What is the HP model printer you have ? I would recommend Epson inkjet printers, should get a decent one for a reasonable price.

But this route does not come problem free, Denisrofe has talked about companies offering refunds, they do. That by definition means compatible cartridges can fail. They do in a number of ways. Not all compatible cartridges are equal. Many are refilled old cartridges. Who knows how many times. They can (and do) leak and if that causes real issues manufacturers may well void the warranty. The circuit boards in some, fail. Rejected by the printer. It happens. Sometimes the quantity of pages printed is not what you expect. I’ve experienced all of these issues over the years. Deciding to wear gloves when inserting a new cartridge. To avoid not being able to print when important, I carried double+ of each colour. For sure the bad ones were replaced without question but that is little consolation if what you want to print was time important, especially if it’s an online delivery costing a few days or a trip down the high street. So not all compatible cartridges are equal. Buy from a reputable source, carry spares and save money. But be aware.

Yes years ago I did have a few problems using compatible cartridges but in recent years standard has gone up and no problems encountered by myself for a long time now. I tend to buy from sellers on ebay with good reviews and if good result, then stick to that seller. Thing is going by Epson printers ) they charge cheap price for the printer, then come the cartridge refill, near enough the same price as the printer to buy a new set of cartridges. I just use my EpsonXP-442 for general home use and a new set of 4 cartridges lasts me on average around one year plus! I always buy 5, the 3 coloured cartridges plus 2 black ones, reason for that being in general use due to most work being printing writing, black gets more usage than the colours. When installing compatable cartridges on the Epson printers, you get a warning telling you that it is not an Epson cartridge and do you wish to proceed and you just continue with the installation and it works fine. My friend also has an Epson Printer/scanner that he purchased from Argos around 4 years ago for just over £40 and it is still working fine. Cheaper model than mine which was purchased around 6 months before for around £50. He is not technical so I install the cartridges for him. Difference in my cartridge prices as follows. Argos for genuine Epson 29 Strawberry Ink Cartridges - Black & Colour set of 4 is £43.99 and that is not a bad price ! In July this year I purchased on eBay from seller Go Inks who I have used before and who has a ''99.4% positive Feedback '' 5 Ink Cartridges XL for Epson Expression Home XP-245, XP-332, XP-352, XP-442 price paid was £7.75 and that is for 2 black cartridges and the three colours. Installed and working fine as did the previous cartridges I purchased from the same seller.

HP ENVY PRO 6430 is the one I have now.Laser seems a good idea does that need any ink and how long do they last. Laser printers, unlike inkjet printers, do not use ink cartridges. Instead laser printers use toner cartridges, so be sure to purchase accordingly depending on your printer. If you decide to instead buy replacement cartridges for your HP printer, ensure you buy the XL size which will last a lot longer than the standard size cartridge.

When I purchased cartridges I used a local photography shop. Generally good and quick to replace faulty ones. But now I’ve gone down the more expensive printer with cheap ink option. Epson. I do a decent amount of printing and have changed the black once in 18 months. Colours still over half full, reckon I’ll get 3 years out of the tank, black every 18 months. And the ink is Epson branded and very cheap. Horses for courses. I personally will never go back to cartridges, not because I don’t rate them, I used them, but the sheer convenience of rare refilling and I’ve never had to run through the cleaning process yet. I’m just lazy, I don’t carry spares and just carry on printing.
