What that hot stuff players used to rub into their legs before a game which stank the place out and probably did nothing useful at all? Was it called Ralgex liniment or some such? I assume it's use has passed into history.

Deep heat is maybe what you are thinking of. Tiger Balm is another one which was probably hotter than deep heat. The trick is to go to the toilet before applying cos you get on your trouser snake and you are in a world of pain!
Vicks is another popular one, you rub it under your nose and smash a load on your shirt on your upper chest. Helps you to breathe better during the game.

When playing for Orient Cavaliers in the mid/late 80s one of our players fell injured after grazing his leg on the partially frozen pitch. It left a nasty red graze. The trainer runs on and sprays a liberal amount of ralgex over the area! It did the trick he was up in a nano second running round, swearing at everyone.

I remember the smell in the changing room, it certainly unblocked your nose if needed.
Ahh.. Early 1970s at Wadham Lodge playing for London Underground in the S W Essex E London border league - A weekly dose of brutality. 😯

I am wearing (if that is the right word) Tiger Balm right now - slept 'funny' and have a bugger of a pain in the shoulder blade. It has Cinnamon in it I think. At any rate I fancy cake.

My wife did the shine walk last week and at the end of it was drenched through and aching obviously. She got a bit of a cold / blocked nose so she put some olbas oil on some tissue and was breathing it in. Some got on her fingers and she rubbed her eye, I could not stop laughing as she was moaning her eye was on fire!!

I did just that with deep heat, not on the old fellah, the ball bag and that was too tender a place to wipe it off.
