Absolute legend, especially when it comes to the clean sliding tackle. His trade mark.

He seemed to set off about ten yards away but manage to time his arrival perfectly! Tremendous full back and captain.

The dark arts of the game have been a feature of the Wellens era and arguably has been part of our success. A peak Wellens team would have closed out a 2-0 win. For some reason this season it's not happening. Maybe there has been a clamp down but to me it feels as if we've been getting fewer yellow cards not more. Would be interested to see the stats. The dark arts as they are now known have been alive and well certainly in my 60 odd years of watching the game. Even over Hackney Marshes. Nothing new and certainly not a Wellens feature. These days it’s perhaps a little more sophisticated and called game management rather than time wasting. With 34 yellows, league, we are amongst the worst offenders. Referees have been clamping down on it and rightly so. Teams need to be clever when the ball is in play, that will never be punished because opponents have the chance to challenge for the ball. The issue is usually when the ball is dead. Excessive time taking a throw or kick, obstructing a fast opponents free kick, kicking the ball away. Yellow card definitely. Context comes into play, referees look at the situation and can offer leeway when the game is drifting to a conclusion. There is absolutely no leeway when one team is chasing and Sweeney does what he did. Yellow all day long and RW calling it petty is just wrong. I'd call it marginal rather than petty, but if you are on a yellow already you certainly don't want to risk being on the wrong side of a marginal call. It suggests a certain lack of maturity and it's something I've noticed before with Sweeney. It's a pity, because he has talent and can be quite a creative full-back on his day. He does not however always seem to get the basics right and until he does he is always likely to be part if the back-up team.
As for discipline generally, the O's record is dreadful, yet you certainly wouldn't think of them as a dirty side. My impression is that too many players are struggling at this level and the pressure they are under causes them to resort to fouls. Am I wong?
