Leyton Orient loan midfielder Josh Wright was very close to swapping England for America, but was just glad to get another chance to prove himself at Brisbane Road.
The 25-year-old joined the O’s on loan last season under Russell Slade, but his opportunities were limited to just two substitute appearances before he was called back to parent club Millwall due to an injury crisis at the New Den.s
At the time Wright didn’t want to go back to the Championship outfit, however he is pleased to have another chance to impress 12 months down the line.
“It was very frustrating when I came here last season,” said Wright. “The boys were fantastic and they were flying. I had no complaints about not being able to get in the side.
“I was waiting for my chance and I felt it was coming. I went back to Millwall and it wasn’t ideal and to be honest I didn’t really want to go back at the time and I never really ended up playing.
“There is a bit of a point to prove but I am looking at it more that I have been here once and this is the same as last season. The loan has happened again and I want to keep trying to impress the fans and everyone around and keep helping the boys and the club out.”
Wright had been training with the club before his loan move, but he nearly headed off to the United States and Chicago.
The midfielder admitted it was close to going through, but felt it was just a little too early in his career.
“I just came into a bit of a crossroads in my career at this stage,” added the former Scunthorpe man.
“I have had a bit of in and out over the last season or so and it’s been frustrating. You think of things and people come up with ideas and approach you with this and that. You have to take everything on board and you have to keep your options open. But there was an opportunity for me to come here and there was always a view that something could happen for me.
“I was going to go out to Chicago but at the same time at the back of my mind I felt it was just slightly too early in my career.
“I have made that decision and I am very pleased I have now and hopefully it continues to work out here and I can enjoy my time here.”
Having had a spell at the club before has certainly helped Wright settle in once again, and he even knows some of the new faces at the O’s – Darius Henderson from his time at Millwall and Chris Dagnall while with Scunthorpe United.
And already having that bond with the players is a massive plus for the Bethnal Green-born man as he hopes to help the O’s rise up the League One table.
“The group more or less stayed together and the boys that they signed in the summer I have ironically played with over the last few years and know very well,” said Wright.
“Not all of them, but a few of them. It’s a great bunch of lads and we want to get out of the situation we are in with the position in the table.
“We feel and we know we should be higher in the table and we are going to keep working hard and strive to do that.”
