Just noticed on BBC football site Aveley FC are playing Notts County away on Saturday in the 4th round of the FA Trophy. As the club are not a million miles away from the O's ground has our intrepid scouting system noted any Aveley players that could step up to O's level. I note East Thurrock are located in the same neck of the woods as Aveley. Could there be another Marv lurking waiting to be discovered? Or is it considered that players at Aveley are to low down the pyramid system to be given a second chance if they were released by Pro clubs? I do remember another non league side that embarrassed a certain Div 2 club in the FA cup recently by players discarded by Pro clubs.

Interesting point OOG! I’m pretty sure that Keith Day, who I’m sure you’ll remember as the O’s centre half in the 1988/9 promotion season started his career at Aveley - even though we got hold of him via Colchester Utd.

Yes good spot on your part Red. Its been a while since I lived in that part of Essex (if it can still be called Essex) but back in the day (Uncle Albert talking) there was a good standard of football played in most parts of Essex. Around Aveley clubs that existed included Rainham, Dagenham, Barkingside, Barking,Ilford,Tilbury, Grays, Romford, Ford Utd at Dagenham , Pitsea, Purfleet and Hornchurch to name but a few. Not to mention the clubs that played in the lower Olympian and Essex Business Houses leagues. My sources tell me the Business houses league has gone. I'm still of the opinion there is still untapped talent in this and other areas of Essex but it would appear too few players come through this route any more to play in the Pro leagues. Lack of ambition on the part of players to play higher, work commitments, Pro clubs in the clutches of agents not bothered to scout any more and Players earning a good wage or salary and the differential to play full time in Div 2 minimal. I don't know the answer.

I'd like to know where our scouts scout, and how many of them are there. Anyone know?
