Looks as though Carl Fletcher has rejoined AFC Bournemouth as loans manager ( see link for interview below). Not much we didn’t already know about his time at the O’s in the interview although there some rather pointed comments about “ not having any of my own staff” during his four week stay at the club and never being able to “ jump into” the bond that the players and staff had developed. Fletcher - I got it wrong in terms of certain individuals!

Sounds like he was Billy-no-mates and nobody at Orient really gave a toss. How’s that for a unique culture. Unique in as much as leaving someone to drown when the life vests are there to be used and were not.
Instead of being thrown a buoyancy aid to help him along they threw him a sack of bricks.
Not a great advert for our club in general and Ling in particular. A sorry episode worthy of Becchetti.
And expensive.

Not stated in the article but I believe Martin Ling was recently quoted as saying Fletcher had been “paid up in full” - so yes, it was a costly mistake for all concerned unfortunately 😟

What is a disgrace is that the person responsible for this costly fiasco is not only still in his job but being defended for his incompetence.
Unbelievable Jeff.

To be fair dis he is not the first senior manager to make a costly mistake. He is fortunate he has a boss who understands this and is supportive in public. Though a repeat would probably not be tolerated. Which is why I think ML avoided another selection process and another cock up.

I think all the article does is highlight how difficult it was for anyone on the outside to come into the club and takeover from JE. The board and ML underestimated how tough it would be, just as Fletcher himself did. In the end he didn’t have the man management skills to make it work and the club couldn’t adapt to him when they were still working through their own issues. No ones to blame, just need to move on and if as Red suggests he was paid up in full, then at least we did that right.

Everybody at the club was aware. Ross made a big point about how proud he was for supporting people through a tough time. He stepped down voluntarily to allow for a new Head Coach. So why would the players or staff have an axe to grind with Fletcher? No reason whatsoever. Ross didn’t want the job and wasn’t kicked out and someone had to come in. Everybody knew that and understood that. Recruiting was not an issue at all. The issue wasnt the circumstances but the choice made. He was simply the wrong person. He may well have had all the qualifications but dealing with people is different. The mis-match in ideas, attitudes, approach, timescales, objectives are things that get ironed out during the interview stage. Ling screwed up, Travis admitted as such and said he personally would get more involved in the future. A slap for Ling delivered in velvet gloves. I find it hard to criticise Fletcher, Ling saw the big picture, all Fletcher would see is what Ling told him. The guy didn’t have a chance and was not given much support. Some of Lings comments following this are nothing short of disgusting. Why Ross was bullied into the job in my opinion.

I placed many comments on the other forum saying that it would be hard to get anyone to come in as a new manager without being allowed to bring some of their own choice staff to bring along with them, for instance their own number two. As normal I was shouted down by the younger members of that forum who knew better !

By excluding the possibility of any incoming Head Coach having the option to bring in his own staff the club not only narrowed the potential field of candidates, they diminished the chances of the new man being successful.

As normal I was shouted down by the younger members of that forum who knew better ! Difficult situation. A new managers inability to bring in their own people if they want probably reduced the number of decent, experienced candidates. Fletcher was probably more OK with this, though clearly not fully, as it was in reality his first manager appointment for some time. Not in a great bargaining position if he wanted the job. Also the club felt a loyalty to Ross which is understandable. a very difficult situation. One that led to the appointment of a totally inappropriate Head Coach. Ross had said he would hold the fort until an appointment was made. The right thing would have been to continue the search for the right person. In the meantime Ross may well have had the change of mind he did. Especially as results were on the up. the whole process was a mess and there were no winners. I was at the time and remain staggered that Ling recommended Fletcher and especially

Whatever way you look at it, in my opinion, a strange appointment, at a time when things were difficult at the club. I do have some sympathy for Carl, as he does appear to have been on a hiding to nothing. That said he accepted the job, on the terms laid out, so difficult for us outsiders to know exactly what went wrong. Although, it does seem he was let down by ML and members of the coaching staff, by all accounts, but who really knows, what went on.
