I started attending the orient at the age of 6 and among the few names I can recall having seen, but little more, is Frank Neary a forward. Dennis pacey was later and of course I saw all his home games. He was decent but cannot be considered in the same class as Groves, Julians, and Johnston. He did have a powerful shot and don’t forget they and the 3 greats I mentioned played with leather footballs which on muddy or wet pitches weighed a ton. In those days we used to sign quality players from the local amateur teams and Pacey, groves and julians all joined via that route, the later 2 from Walthamstow ave.

They had enough people in that area to make Walthamstow Avenue a league club.Been there many times when the O's were away.Didn't we have Ideas of joining with the Avenue at one time and it being our home ground. Thank you for the Frank Neary information.

I think I read somewhere that at one time he was recorded as having the hardest shot in English football. I know from reading about him that he certainly had a shot on him. Dave could certainly hit a ball Timmo but I think the “ hardest shot” tag was given to Ted Phillips who also featured in the same O’s team as Dunmore after he joined us from Ipswich Town.👍 Another two players in the “ hardest shot” bracket were Cliff Holton who was famous for the thunderous power of his shot with either foot, which accounted for many of his goals ! Perhaps the hardest shot of them all was Peter Lorimer of Leeds Utd, Lorimer’s power was clocked at 90mph, “the hardest shot in football'' !

Never sure why Sexton sold Phillips to Luton after scoring 15 goals from 28 matches. Then at the end of the season Dunmore left after 10 goals from 35 matches. Musgrove came back into the team after Ted's departure and Jimmy Scott took over from Dunmore after he was dropped. Musgrove and Scott managed two goals between them in 29 appearances. Sexton then bought in an untried league player in Colin Flatt who managed eight goals in 34 appearances. Classic niavity from a young manager?

I believe Cliff Holton scored his 100th goal while playing for the O's.I stand to be corrected.

I can tell you exactly why- according to Ted Phillips anyway! Phillips was brought in at the start of the 64/65 season by Benny Fenton who got sacked around December time. Sexton came in with his own ideas ,one of which was clearing out the senior players who were set in their ways. It didn’t work too well as the following season Sexton was sacked and the O’s were relegated😟

Never watched them but used to watch Romford Bombers Speedway there until some moany neighbours complained about the noise. Click for bigger I'm probably there, between the floodlight and the stand.

Remember them playing with a couple of ex West Ham players one being Dave Bickles. Big deal when they installed Floodlights. I think West Ham xl came to play for the first game under lights. There must have been some Dosh around in those days along with Chelmsford City big noises in the Southern League. Like all local grounds gobbled up by Developers for housing eventually. Beezer Homes being one.
