We need to drop this 3 central defenders strategy which has coincided with our drop in form. Playing 3 central defenders only works if you have ultra energetic wing backs storming down the flanks , and I see no evidence of this, indeed , lately we have stopped playing out from the back and are by passing midfield by lofting over hit long balls out of defense. Our midfield is constantly being out muscled and we are sacrificing an extra midfielder or wide man in order to accommodate 3 central defenders. On the issue of central defenders I honestly think Happe offers more than Mitchell. yesterday was a very physical game and we were found wanting, it was a game crying out for drinnan and even after taking off the ineffective sotirou we brought on lightweight kemp. Didn’t get that at all. rant over.

Drinan has dropped off of late but for me he has the physical attributes we needed yesterday. Their defence just bossed us off the park. walsall have one of the worst away records in L2 this season, before yesterday had no clean sheets. Yet we didn’t get one shot on target. Don’t think we could have too many complaints if they won, we were hanging on at times. Hardly inspiring. onwards and hopefully upwards.

All good points osoldest.I expected KJ to change the system early on.Walsall were good and a point for us was good for how well they played.Kemp changed it a little and for the short time he was on did a good job. Pity we could not keep up on how we played early in the first half.

I still can't decide if Walsall played out of their skins or we did the opposite. Individually, the Sadlers looked more comfortable on the ball, more able to run with it and much more athletic and physically strong. They soon realised we weren't going to hurt them and so they grew in confidence. We are doing something wrong, but what?

Fisch, what we are doing wrong is in my opinion a result of our line up , playing 3 central defenders. Ok, it may be necessary when we are playing free scoring forest green , but come on we were at home to a Walsall side who away from home hadn’t kept a clean sheet or won, yet we couldn’t even muster a shot on target.

Agree with the original post, rather see our full backs overlapping than playing as wing backs. Also time for Kemp to be given a decent run in the team.

At the risk of making myself unpopular (do I care💁) why not try 442 and yes I no it’s old fashioned but it works💁🙈

As mentioned they were they better team.I was fully expect them to win 1-0.At the same time we were poor. The usual mishap hit passes, either to short or to long.Their defence we given an easy ride.We could have still been playing at midnight and we still wouldn’t have had a shot on goal.To me,Smith is this season’s Wilko.Play like that on Tuesday we might just as well just give FGR the 3. Points. Our record against them is poor anyway

KJ mentioned before the game in his interview that they've struggled to put out a consistent team early on and now that they have their results have picked up. I think their position in the table is a false one in comparison to where they will end up. I'd say they looked good, rather than we made them look good.

We started brightly - which is what Jackett said he wanted - but some poor passing and poor selection and our heads seemed to drop. Archibald sent a couple of balls into the box over the heads of the forwards. A month ago James would have been on the end of those but yesterday wasn't making those runs for some reason.
When Walsall got hold of the ball they found they could march through our centre more or less unopposed. I don't blame Kenny for not changing anything until half time because a fundamental change like that is hard to achieve from the touchline.
Nevertheless the half time changes didn't work because we then lost width, not helped by Ogie's discomfort at left back and Smyth's constant unsporting attempts to make the Walsall defence look lumbering and clumsy which were quite rightly punished by the referee.
Slightly disappointing that we ended the game with one giant forward on the pitch and two tiny ones, which I'm not sure was ever going to work. It was only three up front in the sense that they average out to three normal sized players.

We are expecting too much. The club hierarchy, though they won’t say it directly, have made it clear enough that playoffs at least, maybe promotion is on the agenda for this season. That’s good enough for me. Why should any of us expect less than the owners do. We had a shot at the playoffs last seasons but a poor run in screwed that. It is reasonable to expect KJ to perform better than RE and JM.

I really like Dan and would like to see him recover his fitness/ form and get his place back in the team . In my personal opinion if KJ is going to play the three CBs then Ogie would be the one to drop out in favour of Happe. Mitchell is right footed and offers a better balance plus I think he has been our best defender overall since getting into the team. All about opinions as the saying goes!😄👍

I would like Smith to be dropped, not because he's done anything wrong, but because when he's in the team, the defenders just lob high balls up to him, and we forget to pass the ball.
With Drinnan up front in the centre, this wouldnt happen.
