Not bad players as such but none are anywhere near first team level.
The transfer committee needs to look at themselves and think about what they've done.
Ray Nouble Brown Coleman Moss
Khan may well be the exception and looks good playing anywhere in the oppositions half. But he isn't a defender. Could he cover at right back for a week or two if someone is suspended? Probably. But he isn't a long term solution there and I've no idea where the idea of him being or wanting to be a right back has come from.

Scrap the transfer committee and let the manager be accountable for signings, he has to work with a budget, and his signings will either thrive or dive. At least the manager is master of his own destiny. Giving him the crap you’ve listed above is an absolute abomination.

Well the proof of how bad they were was in the pudding tonight It did indeed. What were they thinking when they signed these guys? What were they thinking. Well it wasn’t the aggressive activity promised for sure. Let’s not forget we also lost Kemp. Bulls*** worthy of Bazza. Absolute shambles of a window. If they were the best of the choices available to KJ, then I suspect he was peeed. You wonder why it all went wrong. Start the season short of depth, then bring in that lot. please let Wellens take full control of incoming players or this farce will continue. I hope RW and PT can make players out of those on long deals.

It's not beyond hope.
Ray, Nouble and Moss will return to their clubs.
Coleman and Brown are so so young and raw. They need to be bled in slowly. Maybe not even next season.
And Khan I would argue is obviously first team ready.
So as I've said all along. Not bad players at all.
But so not what we needed in January.
I will never ever be convinced that these players were KJ's choice. Ever. Just not happening.
But whoever did sign these players seemed to have totally not read the situation we were in and what was needed.

An definitely not KJs choice.

I haven’t seen anything from Coleman to warrant signing him on a free let alone an £80,000 fee. Absolutely crazy. Ray, nouble are not even non league standard and as for khan he is nowhere as good as kemp. He can’t defend to save his life and as a winger he is ridiculously negative. He never backs himself to take on a defender, but when played down the line checks back and the impetus is lost. I actually think that Brown is the best of a diabolically poor set of signings.

I’m going to stick my neck out and say that, despite his current form, eventually Ethan Coleman will become a good signing for the O’s. I’ve simply not seen enough of Brown to have any idea about him. As for Khan - he seems quite industrious but with little end product and is certainly better suited to a wide midfield role than anything else. The fact that both Thompson and Khan have been preferred at full back to Moss since he arrived would indicate that his signing hasn’t panned out at all. Ray has plenty of recent experience but is certainly no better than either Mitchell, Happe ( who he was brought in to cover for) or indeed Thompson who can also play at centre back. Nouble was a poor signing full stop. If anyone needed confirmation as to why - along with the injuries / illness and enforced four week break- our season went off the rails - review the club’s transfer activities in January and things will become clear.😕

In time possibly but not what we needed to push on in January. Right players. Wrong time Not much available in January. Clear. Very few good players available. But we have a DoF. His purpose in life is to use his experience and contacts to find who we need. If none on permanent deals then loans. That’s his job. What we got was two midfielders who may be good in a year whilst selling one with the potential to be good now. Aggressive. No . Pitiful. If I were the Manager having gone into the season under strength with the promise of an aggressive January window I’d be peeed off. In the case of KJ. He is in a career place where he don’t need us and our Mickey Mouse DoF. The timing of our decline is no coincidence. Mickey Mouse. Mickey Ling

Anyone asked why we started the season with such a small squad? Seems to me like KJ spunked his budget on high earners and left no funds for a full squad. With the January money, the available funds did not encourage anyone decent to join us. Plus we blew £80K on Coleman.

Im hoping Wellens saw enoiugh of Nouble to confirm in his mind, hes not keeping him past this season.
The one that bothers me a lot more is Coleman. He truly is terrible.....and he's here for another TWO seasons.
Ray isnt very good either. I noticed last night, almost every time he passes a ball, its to Beckles, he rarely passes to anyone else. hope he goes back to Exeter
Khan is definitely not a right back, or a winger, and i really dont like him at all. No pace and very one footed

Not sure why people are pointing the finger at the Dof? Our set up is clear. Manager says what type of players he wants. Dof asks analysts to come up with a list of potential players in that position. Transfer committee looks at list, decides which players to go for ( manager has final say). Dof opens negotiations to get players in.
Nouble was a desperate choice to fill last minute gap, same with Ray.
The rest were players that the analysts said fitted the brief.
So is it the system that isn’t working?

With the January money, the available funds did not encourage anyone decent to join us. Plus we blew £80K on Coleman. Was obvious (to me anyway) that the budget was blown in getting in Pratley, Smyth, Beckles and possibly keeping Vigs. More obvious when we took a punt on Drinan and Smith.

With the January money, the available funds did not encourage anyone decent to join us. Plus we blew £80K on Coleman. We don’t know that. Nor does that fit with the aggressive in the transfer market in January comment nor fees from the sale of Kemp. If we blew it on Coleman, then that suggests to me there was not a serious intention of fighting for promotion this season. But of course the Management would never admit to this.

I'm idly wondering whether these purchases were made on the basis of KJ's liking of players "on the way up" (as he often remarked) and our board's liking of recruiting players they regard as having a good chance of being sold at a big profit?
Both have merit and perhaps reinforce each other. However, neither are showing a focus on improving first team results.

Dof opens negotiations to get players in. Nouble was a desperate choice to fill last minute gap, same with Ray. The rest were players that the analysts said fitted the brief. So is it the system that isn’t working? Except that’s not how it worked. According to Ling he puts together a list of 6 possibilities (Ling puts this together based on KJ requirements but they are Ling’s selections). There is no guarantee that KJ recommendations make that list of course. If they do they may well be the top 2. The top 2 in that list don’t happen according to Ling, don’t know why, So at best KJ gets to look at the bottom 4 of those players Ling has selected. Ling has previously said the bottom two are unlikely. So KJ gets to choose from 2. Or get nothing. That’s the choice he gets. To be fair, to some degree that’s how it works when you have a DoF, well according to the Saints DoF who explained his role. He chooses players based of what the manager wants, his and his scouts recommendations and what the club can afford. So effectively it’s the DoF who influences new players. But the manager can say No. This is exactly what happened to Slade at Charlton too. The manager is at the mercy of those Ling chooses, and then not the top 2. So KJ has a choice from what’s left. Without a DoF, the Manager will work with the scouts and discuss directly with the Board. As Slade did with Bazza. Cut out the middle man. Then and only then will a manager have a decent chance of getting who he wants. Stand or fall by his choices. With our owners in the USA, that ain’t going to happen. Then look at other Ling comments. Moss came In following his chat with Nuge at Millwall. That worked well. The club had been monitoring Coleman for some time. What does for some time mean. Looking before KJ arrived maybe! It’s pretty clear that Ling controls all this, including the budget. At best KJ may hold out for the odd player and apply strong influence. But the bottom line he gets a choice put together by Ling. KJ players, some maybe, but overall not in a million.

I’m suggesting he gets the list from the analysts, and your suggesting it comes from Ling, the scouts and the manager if I understand you correctly? Just because Coleman has been singled out by Ling as a player with potential doesn’t mean he isn’t thrown up by the analysts as someone to watch as well and if he isn’t good enough for the analysts then how did the transfer committee even consider him. The board have talked a lot about how they believe in using analytical data and I believe one of the new investors is a specialist in this field, so I can’t believe they would allow the tail to wag the dog.
