I can't believe Phil Neville defended him over it.

I don't want to hate on Rooney. I want him to do good things for England but when he puts on that England shirt he sees himself alongside Messi, Ronaldo, Zlatan et al in that Nike advert and he loses his head trying to impress.
He must have been so embarrased thinking millions around the world are watching that.
Also his miss was terrible, he would have slammed that in for Man Utd why can't he score for England?

There was the funniest call to TalkSport after the match last night from some muppet:
Host: What would you do with Rooney? Caller: Play him in his proper position up front Host: So would you drop Sturridge then? Caller: Of course not Host: So you would play both of them up front? Caller: No Host: So you would play Rooney up front and Sturridge wide Caller: No Rooney gotta play up front in his proper position Host: So you would change the formation? Caller: No course not Host: so who would you drop from Wellbeck, Stirling, Lallana, Sturridge or Barkley? Caller: NOne of them of course Host: I'm getting a headache, let's move on.

Trouble is, he gets portrayed as being in the same league as Messi, Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic, so you sort of expect something special from him and when playing for England he generally fails to deliver.
So he's got 39 goals for England, but how many of them would be against top flight opposition, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and France. Sure he can bang them in against Moldova, but the big game players are those who turn up and turn it on against the top teams and in major championships.
As for his correct position, if it's playing off the main striker, then unlike Sterling or Barkley, you won't find our Wayne taking on players and beating them. He might have had that when he was younger, but no longer. He can thread a pass, but a good defender knows that with Rooney in front of him, he's not going to take him on, instead he'll pass it to someone else, so that reduces his threat IMO.
We looked good against Italy going forward because Sterling and Barkley both give a different option, in that they can and do take players on and that is what scares opposition defences.
So times have moved on, sticking Rooney in the No 10 role means that we would carry less of a direct threat from that area of the pitch and become more predictable. You could put him up front instead of Sturridge, but why take out a striker who had 24 goals in 33 games last season and replace him with one who scored 19 in 40 appearances?
I'd put Milner wide left to provide cover for Baines and have Rooney coming off the bench, when the opposition are tiring a bit. We need our best team out there, not worry about individuals egos.
