I have been following the story of Nottingham hockey player Adam Johnson and his tragic death. There has a been an arrest on suspicion of manslaughter against the player whose ice skate caused the injury. ( I am being very careful with the way I have composed that sentence.) I have viewed the censored video, but I have learned not to immediately jump to conclusions in forming an opinion until I have as many facts as can be gathered. I have no interest in watching the uncensored video.
I have a lot of questions about the British legal system regarding criminal allegations in sport, and I am hoping that someone here could point me towards a good UK source for commentary and the interaction with sport and the prosecution of in game alleged criminality. Have athletes been prosecuted for in game alleged acts of violence in England or more broadly the UK.
I have reviewed the elements of manslaughter under UK law, and I have done some other research and I think I have a fair outsiders understanding of the criminal process there, but that is just a beginning point for me to understand the history and context of sport related criminal prosecution. It’s rare here in the US. Thanks for any information anyone here has regarding this issue.

I can't immediately remember any case. The worst l can recall was the 1965 Torino defender Fabrizio Poletti who broke Bobby Collins' leg in an act of outright savagery. Collins never played again. I don't recall Poletti facing any legal consequences for his assault.

One I will leave alone as I have little idea of body positions ice hockey players get themselves in.I have been watching the American take on it.

Duncan Ferguson served 3 months in jail for an on field headbutt in 1994. Rare as most on field incidents which would incur prosecution if they occurred out on the street (assaults and racial abuse for example) get dealt with in house by the sporting body itself. Orient example of this would be John Mackie when he played for Reading.
I have watched the uncensored video and there’s very good reason why the guy has been charged with manslaughter. Unnatural body position to say the least.

I have my views of the incident. I'm reserving comment, not that anyone cares what I think. All I shall say is I would expect for him to be arrested and questioned at the very least. Arrested doesn't mean charged, however.

The butcher of Bilbao breaking Maradona's leg comes to mind but back then it was part of the game. I believe he even kept the boots as a 'trophy'.
Uruguay were a famously dirty side back in the day even before Luis 'vampire' Suarez

Eric Cantona's incident at Crystal Palace in 1995, springs to mind. If you haven't seen it OrientSC then take a look. I think he served a 9 month football playing ban for the incident. Not sure any criminal proceedings took place. Who knows if a settlement was had and what that was.

I’m aware of the Eric Cantona incident but I’ve never actually watched it and will do this afternoon.

The most analogous situation I can think of was the Todd Bertuzzi Donald Brashear incident in the NHL. The attack was cowardly and incredibly dangerous. Bertuzzi hit Brashear in the head from behind with the hockey stick and it looked at first like Brashear had been killed. Bertuzzi was charged and convicted in British Columbia but received a probationary sentence.
Edit: I’ve misremembered. While Todd Bertuzzi had an ugly incident with an attack from behind on Steve Moore, I was thinking of the Marty McSorley slash on Donald Brashear. Bertuzzi received a conditional discharge, and McSorley was given probation as part of the criminal process.

If you’ve seen the video on YouTube it looks very nasty and intentional. Not surprised he got charged with man slaughter. It’s like the Eric Cantona kung fu kick but with sharp ice skates.

I don't believe he has been charged, that will be the decision for the CPS, but he has been arrested for formal questioning. The player arrested was allowed to play in another match, since the incident and before being arrested, where he received a standing ovation. Innocent until proved guilty and all that, but hmm 🤔

I’m impressed as always with the knowledge of the fans on this board and the posts are appreciated. It’s an awful situation, whether criminal or not. I will be following this case closely. I’ve read a lot overnight regarding this situation, the British criminal process, and the views of the Courts by pundits and general public. Our two countries remain very much alike.
