Here is an update on the players currently on loan at various clubs. One point I do want to pick up is this new wave of players not wanting to wear shin pads instead they wear these pairs which are 2 inches in length, yes you read that right. Jack Grealish wears them and in my opinion they need to be banned as they offer virtually no protection at all. Most leg breaks are in an area these pads don’t cover, these are dangerous and I can’t believe they’ve not been banned yet. If you look at Zech picture look at his leg and you will see a small lump in the front about two inches long, that’s the shin pad. I know from experience a pad will save your leg from getting broken. In one game I went into a tackle and we hit each other really hard and I heard a snap, I thought I’m in trouble here expecting my leg to be broken, checked it and my leg was fine, my shin pad had snapped in half from the force, I’ve no doubt if I had not been wearing or wearing these little things I’d have broken my leg. www.leytonorient.com/news/2023/november/17/loan-report---nine-o-s-plying-their-trade-in-non-league/

I wonder if the club can require them to wear the right sized pads.

Seems like they are doing well I agree it does sound positive and what's improved is our ability to get players out and help their development, I guess it's something Lingy has worked on to improve as in years gone by we rarely had players out let alone the 9 we have out now. It's really positive. I guess this fits into Lings long term plan of taking over a non league club. The next step is to move those players up a level to continue that development. We'll done to Lingy and the team to get this positive development moving in the right direction.

I had some hand me down shin pads in the 70's, big things made of cotton with vertical cane inserts.

I wonder if the club can require them to wear the right sized pads. Not only by wearing the required standard of shin pad should lessen the impact of a boot on the shin. The pad will also minimise a cut to the Shin area. This area of the leg has a minimum of flesh density and if cut is very painful(personal distant memory). If the cut is deep it is harder to stitch. The problem with this fashion fad is that the younger players imitate these players.

Is there any sporting rationale for these smaller shin pads?

No not really, those that wear say it's comfort as the pad are nigh on invisible to the leg area when playing. Personally it's just nonsense.

I’m a bit disappointed Obiero hasn’t landed a spot with a National League side. For him to develop and get near our squad, he needs to be playing at a higher level by now. Would have thought Southend could do with some players, only two on their bench yesterday.

They did OK without anymore subs against league leaders Chesterfield coming back from a goal down and winning 2-1 in front of 8300 loyal supporters .

Many silly fashions in football such as hair cuts and players lifting the leg of their shorts as high as they can. Top spot in sport silliness goes to Rugby Union players with even worse style haircuts on those large heads with cauliflower ears.Great game to watch nevertheless.
