Our own Marshall Taylor is on X and posted .....
Preston parent Deepdale Holdings publishes accounts for 22/23 🔑 figures ⚽️ Revenue ⬆️ 12% to £15.5m ⚽️ Wages ⬇️ 12% to £21.5m ⚽️Wages 139% of revenue ⚽️Operating loss £15m (£20m in 2022) ⚽️Player purchases £0.9m ⚽️Player sales £0.8m ⚽️Total losses over the years £81m
PNE get about 16k fans for home matches and have lost £35M in 2 seasons despite player purchases and sales being almost balanced. They are £81M down since about 2020.
I'm quite happy to stay in EFL1 where we stand a chance of getting pretty good football based on a sustainable model.

I trust that Nigel and Kent are working on how to come up with a viable profit-making format to sustain us in a higher league

Some decent sides to maintain interest and perhaps the odd, unsuccessful, flirtation in the Championship. But up there the finances are just out of reach unless we acquire a billionaire owner, even then it’s just silly. I’m happy with where we are.

I'm sure I'd get swept up in the excitement should we make an unexpected charge for the playoffs this season, but logically I hope we stay where we are for the next 2 or 3 seasons at least. Trying to survive in the Championship could ruin this club if it happens too soon. For now I'd prefer us to focus on building a competitive L1 side that might occasionally go deep in the cups.

It may be worth establishing a stark fact of life, even to stand still in EFL1 requires T and T to sink a few million into the club despite the aggressive sales and marketing efforts being made to break even. To achieve a 0 on the balance sheet is something this club has never managed in its 140+ years of existence - short of selling the family silver between 2000 and 2014.

League 1 suits us well at the moment, some good cup runs would help enormously, but that is for another season. This is an excellent division to play in for our club sans a billionaire.

league one is probably our best place. the higher you go the more money you need to stay there.

Should we get promoted to the Championship it doesn't mean we'd have to cripple ourselves financially. We could continue with our current financial structure and squad. It would most likely mean we'd come straight back down but we'd have a season against bigger clubs and new grounds to visit. Then we'd just continue in L1 from the following season. I'm not sure if Luton are spending big to attempt PL status next season but if they're not and they get relegated, then they've had a fun season still.

If we do go up, stay on EFL1 finances and lose a few players who would insist "championship money", then have some fun and get relegated - but without the crippling contracts which would constitute an existential threat. At least it would buck the trend of clubs going into critical further decline.
