I do not see as much humour in the written word as I do at the match.

I do not see as much humour in the written word as I do at the match. I suspect that maybe the humourless times in which we seem to live may be a factor? Some people seem rather quick to take offence nowadays and as a result there can be an element of “ walking on eggshells “ imho .

Some people seem rather quick to take offence nowadays and as a result there can be an element of “ walking on eggshells “ imho . Walking on eggshells. Absolutely. Even on this forum. Not too sure times are humourless. It’s just humour is being stifled by those who look to take offence at anything. So some people are just cautious and the natural humour most of us have is hidden away outside of our personal groups where we can be comfortable in what we say. Killing comedy in my opinion. But I do believe that sometimes there is a fine line between being offensive and being humorous. And that is a line that varies for all of us which is the issue. Ricky Gervais pushing that line quite unashamedly. Whilst I find some of his stuff offensive, I want the choice to watch. I do. But don’t want him banned because of me. And he is bloody funny. I like some of the old comedy routines despite the warnings that they reflect views of the time!

Radio comedy taught how to be humorous, one programme after another, all with a gem or two.Never liked slapstick. It’s a unique skill to be funny on radio. At the Theatre Royal in Windsor they have a season of ‘Air’ shows, live. Where the actors take turns in front of the mikes to do their bit. They just sit down when it’s not their turn. A sound man in the background does the effects like doors closing. Simulation of a radio show. No props, stage settings or comings and goings from the stage. They just perform. True talent shines through. Sounds boring but hugely entertaining.

One of the funniest places is a football dressing room and the humour is brutal. It is probably the last non PC work place there is. It is unique and great.

I think that a lot of workshops are the same, places like car repair garages, independent bakeries, non-chain DIY shops, tree surgery groups, etc. Private small businesses. Chains have rules, multi-nationals have rules. Government and council work places stifle speech, schools, hospitals, blah blah. Shame really. Fun can work both ways.

Humour is alive and well within small groups, whether a football dressing room, workshop or just out with friends. And for sure some can be brutal. Even though large companies have image (and tribunals) to consider, in individual teams the humour can thrive.
