One must hold a grudge to be a football fan,its what makes a goal such a wonderful feeling. The only team I remember disliking a lot was Sheffield Wednesday after the game 22 Sep 1962 Leyton Orient v Sheffield Wednesday. We were on a good run at the time in the old First Division and they resorted to the rough stuff against the Os. They injured a few of our players including a bad foul on our fine centre half Sid Bishop by centre forward David''Bronco Layne'' which ruled out Sid for a few weeks and he never seemed as good after the injury he received on that awful day. After that game Os never recovered, had a heap of injury's, lost confidence and after that good run of results we declined and ended up bottom of the league and got relegated.

My parents banned me from going to that match, probably rightly as events later proved. My friend Steve and myself saw the result coming through on the BBC teleprinter - we lost 2-4, and as you rightly say this was something of a turning point, despite our rather fortunate win at Fulham the following Saturday...

Agree with the cricket comments. Rugby is the same. Its easy for natural sporting rivalry to spill into tribalism and football, for reasons of history, class and religion, often magnifies this. However, the idea of hating on a team and set of fans, based on the colours that they wear is about as juvenile as it comes. Friendly rivalry is the grown up way. I'll try and remember that next time I'm involved with our Scumend Utd team
