Just went to book train tickets to Waterloo and guess what, maintenance. My already long painful journey extended by nearly 2 hours. Travel makes going to games a regular nightmare and have wasted much of our 2 season cards this season. To say this seasons travel has pizzed me off is an understatement. Maintenance, strikes, driver shortages, Jubilee line cancellations, plus a tube breakdown just before Leyton.
can’t buy in advance and get cheaper tickets due to all this crap so leave it till 2 days before. Now forced to get an earlier train through no fault of mine and that’s even more expensive too. Long journey, more expensive. Tickets going for resale tomorrow.

What line are you travelling into Waterloo on?

Dohnut, get in your car and drive yourself to the ground, it’s so much easier than all the messing around you are doing. You can put your radio on and listen to your choice of music, talk or sports stations. You can set the temperature to what is comfortable for you and sit in your nice comfortable chair. Plus you can leave when you want to leave.
There you go I’ve sorted that for you.

What line are you travelling into Waterloo on? Andover to Waterloo via Basingstoke. Usually just over an hour. I get tickets in advance, 2 days before now, and get a lift to the station so get there just a couple of minutes before the train arrives, usually the 12:06. SWR. The Waterloo and City tube no longer runs on a Saturday, cuts out lots of stops but TfL in their wisdom stopped this last year so now it’s the Jubilee line which adds stops and time, change at Stratford for Leyton. So it’s Car, rail, tube, tube walk. Going is OK but the return journey is a pain. Generally get a fixed- time ticket, cheaper, but that means allowing time for delays so a 30 minute wait at Waterloo. Costa coffee helps, that and a good book. Been better this season, Mrs doh having a season card so have company. But have to admit travelling to Brisbane Road from Hampshire for over 20 years is taking its toll and the dark times a mega effort and a combined cot of £100 each match day too plus season cards. At 75 getting too old. But good times make it easier. So much easier when I lived in Ilford.

But parking got more and more difficult, knew a few good spots but to get them had to arrive at the ground early to be sure. And the M25 was so unpredictable. More than once delays meant I never made the game, just turning round and going home. My switching to Rail travel if nothing else generally added a bit of certainty when planning journey times. Car over 200 mile round trip. Shorter going through London but the North Circular is no joke. When company first moved to Hampshire I did Ilford to Andover return by car nearly every day for 3 years. 4 hours travel and a tough day at work. Leaving home at 6am, getting home at 9pm just to miss the worst of the jams. Fell asleep doing 70 mph on the M3 hard shoulder one morning, woken by the rumble strips. So I relocated before I killed some unlucky poor sod. But like many had a lifetime of long working days and travel of varying times. Probably why I’m intolerant when the tough 2 games a week stuff gets mentioned. Frankly footballers with their cushy work lives and a bit of fatigue have no idea what many people have to do and the effort they make.

You are a true fan dohnut,I admire greatly your efforts to support Orient at home games.I complain if I have to get two busses instead of the one journey Central Line train. But I do have walking problems and the busses journey makes for longer walks. One was from the Bakers Arms to the ground,ok in someways going, but the walking back is troublesome.Suffer for a few days afterwards as well.Hope other games give you an easier journey.

Stevenage away is a game I always enjoy going to though not always the result. Strangely some away games are easier regarding travel. Reading a really nice trip.

Used to do the long road trips which is normal in the construction industry and watch all the home games and some away.At the end of the mid week games I used to envy the players having a day off and myself having to drive to Reading,Newbury Marlborough to name just a few after the early rise put in a body aching shift and drive home in a not so reliable car or van.Life is tough that is for sure, made a lot tougher with the passion for your football club and all the issues that is contained in said passion.

A tough world out there for many Redshank. Seen enough in my career, people working their socks off in difficult situations just to build a life for themselves and their families. But I respect those that keep going, keep trying.

Till I drop, not much else outside in the winter months longing so much for the songs of spring.A favourite is the Blackbird(turdus menula)an unfortunate Latin name for such a beautiful song bird. All the thrush group is turdus. The Blackbirds song is heard from early March until mid July. Just as a question, have any of you on this forum heard a Nightingale,I get my Nightingale fix in late April at the Lea Valley Nature reserve, also in some years privileged to hear the plaintive song of the Cuckoo,a lovely looking bird as well.

One particularly busy year 50,000 miles though that was thankfully not typical. The three years I drove to work from Ilford came to 35,000 miles a year. Must have been bloody mad. got a library of talking books, I estimate a grands worth, accumulated over the years as a way to keep me sane. Don’t mind driving and don’t mind the M25, but it’s hugely unpredictable and when bad. It’s awful. Got stuck in a mega delay at the Dartford crossing years ago. Stuck for hours. Train by comparison means the chance to get a seat, hopefully, sit down with a coffee and kindle and let the train take the strain. Have experienced a couple of suicides causing problems and a crash in Salisbury a few years ago but thankfully rare and struggle to get angry when some poor soul has seem this as the only option. So all things considered most of the time the train/tube route is better but recent months have been irritating. At least my Bristol Rovers seats have been snapped up by others so no empty seats which is good news. If only I was abroad I could stream the game. Even if that’s paying twice for the same game. 😉

I share your love for our feathered friends and do all I can to attract them to my garden. Strategically feeding them in areas to reduce risk from cats. Have regular visits from Blackbirds and Robins who nest in trees in my garden. Few years back and for two years a pair of ducks decided to bring up their family in our pond. Year 1 was 8 chicks, year 2 was 12. Bought them food, really enjoyed them gathering around at feeding times. No fear. But since the arrival of neighbours cats they come no more. Just as well, they ate out flowers too.

I did say to a steward can't you just run them over? He laughed and said sorry no can do! My train was one hour and 10 mins late in arriving! So I know the pain! When we had the high winds last month it took me 3 hours to get home! But to orient I drive always, never a problem with parking, can come and go when I want, its an easy decision everytime.

How about Andover to Basingstoke. Basingstoke to Reading, then Elizabeth Line all the way to Stratford. Although all that faffing with changing and the train stopping at every station may not be useful.
Saying that I haven’t been to a home game since before COVID. I’d have to research how to buy a ticket again as it’s been such a long while.

Usually a delay from Basingstoke to Reading and then Reading train stops a lot, but a pleasant ride, used that for the Reading game but got off the stop before. The Elizabeth line is really good but lots of stops and 1 change minimum. May take too long but not tried it. May take a look. 👍

Confucius is sadly wrong with this. Read the book on his sayings and history (I have!). He got plenty wrong and of course a lot right.
