We hear lots about fixture congestion, knackered players and so on.
So is it time for the EFL to consider a radical change to the pyramid. Maybe add a league 3 and even a league 4. The creation of such allowing the EFL to reduce the number of teams in each thereby reducing the fixture congestion and the Tuesday/Saturday complaints we currently get. Maybe even allow players a couple of weeks off in January to coincide with the window so they can recover.
Club Income will be reduced as a consequence of course with tickets and Season Cards being cheaper reflecting fewer games. That could be reflected in players and managers contracts, reflecting fewer demands on them, a pay-per-game sort of thing. Say 15% Such a reduction will reduce pressures considerably, more with a mid-season break.
It also opens the way for the better NL teams to play EFL football.
Though I do wonder how players and managers who bemoan congestion and fatigue would actually vote for a change should it reflect in their personal incomes. Could start by adding a league 3. Do we really need 46 league games a season? Why not 36 plus cups. Drip feed changes over a few years, tricky transition of course.

I think you alluded to the problem, ten fewer games is a significant drop in revenue without a commensurate reduction in costs. I suspect that would push a number of clubs over the edge, rightly or wrongly.

I can't think of any other country in which clubs compete in 3 domestic cups. Scrap one.
Potentially: No more PL teams in the League Cup. The top prize is only 100k. They won't care. Make the pizza cup for non-league only. League 1/2 fans don't care about that competition, will care even less if they have a better chance of winning the League Cup, and it could help non-league teams earn vital funds (albeit from a smaller prize pot, presumably).

The pizza cup does allow for youngsters and nearlies to be assessed on how they play.I do agree though on both the points you make.It is the injuries we get that makes the season so difficult.Short term injuries seem to be a thing of the past.

Just an observation but teams in the lower divisions have played 46 league games a season for as long as I can remember . Also they have fielded teams in both the “League Cup” and FA Cup. If the “ Pizza Trophy” is the only discernible difference why are players now - who have the benefit of better training facilities/ regime , health and diet - so tired in comparison to the counterparts in the 70’s and 80’s for example? Asking for a friend!😄😄👍

Look at the facilities like you say and it's night and day between them and the improvement in the pitch is beyond compare so less strain on the legs as well. I remember Liverpool winning the league using only 15 players or something crazy like that, no rotation then. Maybe rotation is the issue? I must have played over 1,000 games and in that time I was only ever sub a handful of times, I was never tired. Being the player I was I was never going to be a sub for anyone, I wouldn't have accepted rotation as they call it now, as I wanted to play every minute of every game as I knew I could make a difference to the game and for the team. Trouble is it's a different game and a different time now! Being s sub is accepted as is rotation, it would have driven me mad. I sure the same for anyone who played in the 70/80/90. Can you imagine saying to Kevin Keegan oh sorry your sub this week! Or Glen Hoddle or Gazza or Robson. No way would they accept that.

There's definitely room for tweaking the fixtures a bit imo.
When I was a kid I'm sure the football season started at the beginning of August and not the end as it does now, start the season first Saturday in August like before.
Also, The FA Cup, it often happens that two teams in the FA Cup that have been knocked out for arguments sake say the 1st round proper then when the 2nd round fixtures are being played those two teams have a free Saturday, why not rearrange the league fixture for that date? The teams this will effect will be known once the matches for each round have been played so should be enough notice for fans and clubs alike?
This isn't a massive amount of games but coupled with starting the season earlier may aleviate the Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday malarkey somewhat, or is that to simplistic/load of bollox?

Why don’t we start the season playing the odd Tuesday night, rather than wait for cancellations due to weather, international breaks and cup clashes backing games up into February and March. Much prefer to be watching an evening game in August/September than in the depths of winter.
