I have found out on you tube that Woodford Town FC are back playing in Woodford at the Ashton Playing fields after 28 years away.Their original home is a stones throw away in George Lane. The old ground is still there but padlocked and overgrown, always a sad sight. They play in the Essex Senior League so not a bad standard of football.Ashton is also the home of the famous Essex Ladies Athletic Club.Must get down there to see both. When I was 6 it was where my school team played.

My daughter was with Essex Ladies for a few years. They did some really good away trips. Mrs dOh and I followed her around the country. Sadly at a very young age she developed knee issues and stopped as a precaution.

Woodford Town as a subject is really interesting. I remember, and recall something slightly to the account you give, or a least am confused by other stuff I have recently read. One of My first Orient matches (after VS Rugby, then Forest) was Woodford away in the Cup. Was that down at Snakes Lane and wasn’t that the original? Also, after reading the history of Wanderers FC, their original home being Hollow Ponds/Leyton Flats that they moved to George Lane, but there are no playing fields close to George Lane anymore let alone which are padlocked, or at all, unless missed something. Where is this? Perhaps over by Chigwell Dump (which close to Ashton)?

Woodford Town FC's ground is not and never has been, in or anyway near, George Lane.

It was near the bottom of the hill on Snakes Lane East. That bit was called Woodford Bridge, a reference to a road bridge over the river Roding which is now mostly buried by the M11 flyover above it.

Knee issues have ruined my retirement,I have a brand new set of golf clubs they have never been used.Must have been tough for you daughter at such a young age.Is all well now. I have recently seen videos of Lilian Board at her best and did not know she was South African born, maybe of British parents.Remember the beak in television at Christmas time telling of her untimely demise.Heartbreaking stuff. A few doors away from our house in Debden was a mile runner who won a surprising gold for England in the Commonwealth games.I believe her name was Rita Ridley but time has dimmed my waning brain.

Correct, not George Lane.I like the drive toward Harlow on the M11 when I go to a nursey there.I see all the places I played with our gang of schoolboys and girls. Some beautiful views of the Essex countryside along the M11.

We walk the Woodford dump to observe the wildlife and can guarantee no one about.A fantastic Valley has been formed by the dump and we have seen some rare blue butterflies. Many toxicity meters are about and is at times a difficult walk.Woodford Towns old ground is opposite the gasworks but the huge gas container is not there as it is pumped by diesel engines. Remember the O's match there which was a draw, but we won the replay. So good was their winger that he signed for Charlton. There is a park opposite; Rays Park perhaps that is what you refer to.

I lived in Claremont Grove, just off Snakes Lane East, and had a few invitations to watch Woodford Town. Frankly, each time l went I was struck by the 'geezas' there giving it large in mockney accents. Everyone seemed engaged in appearing as dodgy as possible and revelling in their Arthur Daly-ness. Not a place for me.
