I watched West Ham v Orient on The Big Match 4th August 1974 in the first round of the new Texaco Cup,.An 18 year old Laurie Cunningham made his debut,a little difficult for him at times but still was a joy to watch. The whole team under George Petchey not surprisingly played some superb football which I remembered well.Brian Moore gave a good account of Orient.Unfortunately I only saw the first half with West Ham winning 1-0 as Mrs redshank called me in for tea and there is no unforgiving minute when called in for tea. If you can get to see it on you tube I am sure it will delight.I followed Laurie's career and to me he was and still is something special. So sad I did not know about the unveiling of Laurie's statue as I would have liked t tell his family and friends how much I admired him.I believe the great Cyril Regis was present as well.

Cunningham was long gone by ‘84.

I just saw the second half and it did say 1984,maybe that was wrong.however I will look again.Thank you for putting the correct date. Just had a look on you tube and it was 1974,how times fly.1984 was the worst year of my life.

When i watch football on the tv and pundits rave over some of the players in the Premier league i often wonder what they would have made of Laurie. To this day I've never seen a more graceful player he seemed to float over the pitch and that was on terrible pitches. My favourite all time O's player simply different class

Thanks for this recommendation redshank. That will be on my TV schedule tonight. I did a quick check and I was able to find it. I can watch it on the bigger screen through YouTube. I’m looking forward to it.

There was a documentary made about him First amongst equals by ITV, which is well worth a watch.

I have seen the game when WBA beat United (I think) 5-3 some nasty noises coming from the crowd, but Laurie showed them.

He was without doubt the best player I have ever seen turn out for the Os, and I saw my first game in 1953 as a five year old. They were in Div 3 South then. He was even better than Johny Hartburn, who I am sure you all remember.

I remember Johnny.Players stayed around for a long time in days back when, now they seem to be will o' the wisps. Two year contract, mostly injured for first season, play part of the next season spasmodically, then move or are moved on.Difficult for whoever has to sign players.
