Anyone can be a vocalist now, with automatic pitch correction, auto double tracking, harmonisers, timbre enhancers and voice compression plus various reverbs, delay, Freq modulation, even de-harmonisers and pitch shifters, notch filters, graphic EQ, stereo panning, auto remixers, octavers... All that stuff has moved audio even further way from reality than Photoshop has done for imagery. I don’t understand what all that vocal stuff is or does but it sounds impressive. Mind you I like photoshop. Confucius say: ‘We fear things in proportion to our ignorance of them.’

Those technologies can be used lightly to perfect a vocal track or more heavily to stylise one, but the source vocal does need to be to a certain standard in order to get the best out of them. A truly horrible singing voice is not going to be made more listenable by passing it through a stack of filters, although a slightly flat one could be. (Speaking from experience.)

Just when you were thinking "she's a good singer". Then you discover it's not even her voice you're hearing, it's most likely a "modelling" voice designed to mimic Annie Lennox.
However, Dubioushubris is right, this gear can make huge 'improvements' but there's a level at which the source must not sink below.

If only I could post videos. It is the song not the singer, proven many times on you tube. But when you get the combination of the two it really is special.Looking back on songs since recording became available you realise certain songs are made for certain people. Recently I have been made aware of how good Amy Winehouse was. Many versions of the great Carole Kings Will you still love me tomorrow are available but Amy does it true justice.

When you overdo it with auto-tune, although in this case it was intentional but there's a barrage of other effects applied too.

Confucius say: ‘We fear things in proportion to our ignorance of them.’ Accepting ignorance of a subject is not a sign of fear at any level. Even Confucius was I’m sure ignorant of some (many) things and it’s what no doubt fed his thirst to learn more. Those that assume they know everything, learn nothing.
