I think we all agree that Richie is a winner and today he wanted to win. Why has the team performed so poorly these past four of five games? By now the players will know who is being offered a new contract and who isn’t. Have those players downed tools leaving us weaker as a consequence? Are they protecting themselves from injury by “playing within themselves”? its quite clear to me that some are not reaching the levels that they are capable of, so I’m certain it’s very clear to him. So why didn’t he drop those players and put youth in or others who want it, but maybe not quite good enough for this level, at least they’d battle for him and the shirt.
Anyway here is what he had to say.

Poor performance by many. Typical end of season. Result didn’t matter. Not too fussed at what is a poor end to an overall decent season. Mid-table is good.enough. Glad RW wants more, we all do. Hope we keep those RW wants.

Hope we keep those RW wants. Not sure Richie feels “ mid table is good enough” as his remark about “ little old Leyton Orient” in the interview indicates. I hope I’m wrong but I think there is a danger of a slight disconnect between what the Board are able to provide and what RW feels he needs to make meaningful progress.

For sure he wants to win, but sadly when a team reaches theoretical safety they switch off perhaps without even realising it. On the 🏖 syndrome they call it

Richie seems really peed off, and the leaving of Matt Harrold seems to have upset him.
I think he wants a club thats prepared to spend the money, to bring in players of top league 1 standard, and im not sure we can
I hope im wrong, but it wouldnt surprise me if he leaves, if a top league 1 club, or a mid table Championship club come knocking

I’m sure he wanted more but is realistic enough to appreciate it’s a good performance. Which it is. January didn’t help. I’m sure he is savvy enough to understand you don’t always get what you want but that don’t mean failure, just not the level of success you hoped for. Next season will be different. He is ambitious for himself, the rewards of success are massive. If we don’t give him the tools, others will, and who could blame him if his ambitions outgrow what we can provide. No criticism, just life. So the disconnect you mention is real. But it’s one that is perhaps not possible to deal with.

Look at Exeter and Wycombe. When Richie first came here he got the team playing till the end as a spring board for the next season. He is a winner and he has not signed an extension to his contract that apparently has been on the table for weeks. That tells me he could be waiting around for something to appear in the close season

I noticed Darren Pratley taking the pre-match training session for some of the players, wondered if that was a pointer for 24/25.Playercoach,one set of wages frees the position for a signing.Or was my eyes(fully tested 19-4-2024)deceiving me.Maybe I am labouring under a misapprehension.

That tells me he could be waiting around for something to appear in the close season There is no rush. These things take time, RW and the club will be focused on many things other than the contract so finalising details, via his agent who is probably dealing with others and not just RW, may drag on. The club and RW will want it to be agreeable to all. Getting it right creates a better working environment. As for other opportunities! Evans signed a new contract and shortly after left the club for Rotherham. The contract will no doubt cater for this possibility so signing one is no guarantee anyway. Just allows the club to get some compensation. Routine these days. Even Slade had a get-out clause inserted.
