Do you enjoy the closed season or are you a "cannot wait" person.I am pleased when the seasons ends as the Saturday worry will not be with me until next August. But of course there are the Test Matches and the Essex County Championship matches to care about. But the feeling is not as intense, except when it is an Ashes series. 25 scheduled days of crippling anxiety,I don't know how the players get through an Ashes series.

Is there nothing else in your life that gives you pleasure other than sport ? For myself, at my age of 76 years old, other than sport, I have so many other things in my life that are of interest to me, to mention just one thing, doing gardening and growing various vegetables, plants of various types etc takes much of my time in the spring and summer.

So many things, walks in the countryside reading books and poetry astronomy, gardening watching educational videos on you tube.Trying to get computer and phone savvy amongst many.Never bored and rise at 7am most mornings, love sunrises and sunsets.Did you know where we are in latitude affords us the wonderful sunrises and sunsets.Love my garden above all my sweet peas and if you want to try them the fantastic ranunculus which are now in flower and the one in a small vase has flowered for more than a week, such long lasting beauty.Just waiting for a dry spell to plant more flowers and get mowing which I find very therapeutic.Loving my retirement, but not my age. Also visiting anywhere in London including museums and art galleries.Love looking at any architecture,so many wonderful things hidden among the most bland of buildings.Love walking along riverbanks, seen many kingfishers and a couple of the fantastic watervoles. Will be going to Lea Valley Park soon to hear the nightingale John Keats wrote of so beautifully,if you have not heard a nightingale please endeavour to do so,one of the sweetest sound of spring you will ever hear.

At my age I’m quite happy for the closed season to feel like it lasts a long time, sadly these days in the blink of an eye it will be kick-off time. Great deal of interest in the comings and goings especially with us but I take a real interest in other clubs. I really enjoy the cricket season, weather permitting, and dare I say the 100s. I may pop along to the bowl and watch a county game as I’ve not seen one in years. Gardening too, flowers, strawberries, tomatoes growing at the moment, the greenhouse is full. Managed to ward off the ducks who were trying to set up home in my pond again. Lovely to see but the little ducks do like eating the garden plants and outstay their welcome when bigger. Nice time of year.

I must say that, the odd season when we have something to play for apart, I usually get to April and am quite glad for it to be coming to an end.
Come the end of June and a few weeks off I'm chomping at the bit to get to some godforsaken place like Great Wakering for the first friendly 😂

I'm looking forward to seeing who we'll sign in the summer.I genuinely feel we just need to sign Idris and our midfield will be really exciting.Agyei will score 20 plus if he stays fit for most of the season and I'd like to keep hold of Forde for another season as i think he's been excellent and will only improve

Many of the things that I am looking forward to as well. I still have a few years to go. I love the bit about the nightingale. When we lived in Walthamstow we had one singing in a tree just outside the house every night waking us up during the early hours of the morning. As the traffic had stopped and the world was at peace we could hear the replies of what presumably was another nightingale some distance away. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seemed that there was a pair. One of my close season ambitions is to buy a narrowboat and do about ten weeks a year on it. Summer is a great time for this. Of course, the odd week during international breaks and long distance away matches can be slotted in. A good de-stress from the tension of the season. It's a wonderful life to have the contrast between the peace of nature, the countryside and the world of the water ways, and the grumpy bumpy rough ride of the Saturday afternoon at Brisbane Road. Gardening and walking are such pleasure too. I just wish Dohnut would point some of his ducks in my direction. My pond is waiting.

Gardening and walking are such pleasure too. I just wish Dohnut would point some of his ducks in my direction. My pond is waiting. A duck in our pond was a regular feature, we live close to many lakes where there are many so I guess the odd one looks around for a peaceful spot. Made the mistake of feeding her regularly. Next thing was about a dozen of her chicks around. Fed them too with the correct food. Eventually they go. But it’s a wonderful thing to see them congregate around our back door in the morning and around your feet as you walk to the pond with their breakfast. Happened for a couple of years, then nothing. Now back again with her mate. But they do love eating plants, essentially begonias. And I’m not too sure our fish enjoy the contamination. But have a good filter system. Not too sure I want another brood. Get a variety of wildlife in our garden. Got the usual bird feeders but occasionally others, including birds of prey, we clean up the remains too often, not nice. Had a couple of baby deer over the years, don’t know where they come from. Hedgehogs, bloody rats, field mice and so on. Bird songs are great. But gulls live on the lake and they make too much noise. Buy loads of good bird seed, meal worms, suet pellets (and peanuts, though not during the breeding season), got our regulars, appear as soon as the morning food goes down. Get very used to people, especially the robins. They nest in our garden trees. The Squirrels eat from our walnut tree, birds from our cherry and apple trees and berries as winter approaches. We have a very wildlife friendly garden. One of life’s joys.

Enjoy cricket, athletics, summer football tournaments, walking and playing tennis. Then signings, speculation and friendlies arrive, just in time to stop me being bored 😁
