I worked in a Co-op milk yard when 15, for £2.8/6d per week,but got tips from the milkmen adding about 25/- to my wages.Also had the fun of driving the milk floats
Left after a few months to be a floorlayer in the construction industry.

Saturday boy at the old fishmongers on Church Lane, Leytonstone when I was 14. I lasted one day and made six quid. I think they were hoping I'd be more of a laugh.
Did the occasional odd job from then on but my first proper job was at the Walnut Tree on Leytonstone High Road. I forget the exact wage but Wetherspoons liked to make a big deal about paying 10p over the minimum wage, then made you work about half an hour's unpaid overtime at the end of your shift.

My first job was a general labourer/ tea boy in an engineering firm about 4 quid a week if I remember , I legged it when they were going to grease me from head to toe as an initiation ceremony ☹️

Apprentice groundsman at you guessed it Brisbane Road for a tenner a week in the spring and summer of 1975.
Sent most of the time cutting down bushes behind the West Side and painting the Windsor Road toilets.
Mum worked for the Post Office and brought me home an application form for an apprentice engineer.
My time at the O's finished in October of that year, did get a season ticket as a leaving gift though.

Did a paper round as a young boy. 3 delivery routes, 6 days a week, very early mornings, all weathers and own bike. 8 shillings a week (40p). Thought I was rich. Reg’s newsagent in Chatsworth Road, Clapton.

1971: London Transport Traffic Office (Buses) trainee, got about £15/week as I recall. Seemed like a fortune compared with the £1/week for my paper round! Stayed with London Transport Buses (which became Stagecoach London in 1994 upon "privatisation"), retiring after 46 years, effectively with the same organisation all of my working life.

Milk round around Brockley/Nunhead/Peckham..Doubled up with a paper round around Brockley,in which I used to deliver to Kate Bush’s old house.Can’t remember wages but the combined wage of the two jobs was about £4/5 weekly…At 16.8yrs I joined HMS as a young soldier in which I spent 15+ years.Came out a man and much wiser.

Office boy in Gracechurch Street for an insurance company 1966. Dickensian organisation even then, my boss had clip-on collars which he'd get cleaned and starched - rather than wash and iron the shirt.

16. Trainee designer. Hackney Wick. £27.50 a week.
Edit. Before that, as a kid, I had paper rounds for years. Worked in a body shop in Leytonstone High Road and a shelf stacker in Chingford.

Management Trainee at DA Moody House Builders at Wash Road Hutton head office year summer 1969 - Salary not sure something like 30 pounds a month.

Cramphorns Upminster about 1966 Seed merchants and Pet shop £5 pw, left after 2 months. Joined Times Newspapers Apprentice Electrotyper/Stereotyper £15pw, never looked back.

If it is childhood jobs I started those at 10 years old.Milk round then paper round 10/- a week with the near broken neck with the weight of all those News of The World on a Sunday for the men of those days,also went "bottling" during the school holidays.Later classified evening news on a Saturday around Valley Hill and Danbury road Loughton area from 5.30pm about 5/-.The last type of that work was with a bakers round around the Southend and Leigh-on Sea area.I had to get up at 4am went to Neville's bakery at Leytonstone.Got home at 6pm for 12/- for the days work.
The work ethic never left me and I still do things with maniacal speed,body permitting.

My friend laid the tiled floors in the Moody houses,probably before 1968,certainly from 1960-1964. |
