The draw against Aston Villa when we needed to win to get to the top level was very unpleasant.I saw a tramp shuffling along Whipps Cross Road with all his worldly goods in a supermarket trolly on the way home and felt twice as bad. Redshank, that is exactly the type of game I really want to forget. How did we screw that up? Rhetorical question, we are Orient! Nothing positive comes from reliving past screw-ups. Aston Villa were poor all season but they played that game as if their lives depended on it.The goalkeeper at times was outstanding.Orient did their very best but the prize eluded them. Some odd goals against us that season.Strange no one calls out Villa as a team they dislike. Be brave young dohnut all adds to our storied past.I saw a you tube video asking which teams have played in the top flight but never the PL five were named,PNE had a forty six year tenure of the top league and of course we was one of the five.Carlisle who pinched our place that night was another.

Worst has to be the evening game on the 3rd May 1974 at home to Aston Villa. Attendance 29766. Villa had been rubbish all season and had nothing to play for. We needed to win to be promoted back into the old Division One (before the dire Premiership). They played out of their skins that night and we only drew 1-1. We stayed down and bl**dy Carlisle went up to the top division instead. We can only dream of what might have happened if we had gone up. I was totally gutted that night along with the other 29.000.

By no means the best game but most unforgettable was Matt Lockwood's 1986 hat-trick against Gillingham when we were 3 down with 15 minutes to go. Half the crowd had left the ground and missed it. Yes that's on my list of great games, and I was there to see it. But 1986? I doubt it given I was barely born then And Matt Lockwood was only 10! Weird misprint for 2006.

A few others to mention
The 2-0 home win over Spurs in the League Cup in 1985
The 4-0 home win against QPR in 1980 or 81.
The 3-1 home win against Chelsea on Boxing Day 1975, when Laurie ran them ragged.
Sutton followed by Gillingham away last year were both magnificent in very different ways too

Also saying it is unlucky if you hit the post or crossbar, the idea is to get the ball into the large area of the goal.

Luton 1-0 on Boxing day 1970 also a great memory.

QPR had most of the possession but flattered to deceive with over-elaboration, as I recall. We had about half a dozen attacks and scored from four of them! The artisans gave the "Fancy Dans" a reality check that evening.

The Villa game for me was one of the most soul destroying games I ever went to. I still find it hard to think about it. Whereas the cup win over Chelsea in 72 will always bring a smile to my face.
