Hornchurch won the Isthmian league with 100 points from 42 games, could not say what league they will be playing in next season, maybe National League South.Went there a few times when John Martin played for them and the club was owned by a double glazing company owner.

Weren't they flying high in this period paying big bucks for the league they were in. But unfortunately the Chairman's company took a tumble. Money dried up so the best players left for pastures new.

Played for them in the late 60s . Was that at the stadium with a running track? Confucius say: “The people sitting in any stadium might be ‘at’ the game, but very few of them are actually ‘in’ the game.”

Played for them in the late 60s . Was that at the stadium with a running track? Yes it was. Pitch was a tad narrow if I recall. School Athletics held annually. Back in the day had a cinder track. Hopefully that surface well in the past.

One of the few places I lived in Upminster was bridge avenue opposite the ground
I think I ran around that track in around 1968 schools race
In those days Hornchurch were in the lower Athenian league
They have done very well over recent years

In '86, when I was knee high, I attended an athletics day at that track. I was surprised to find a big track there, tucked away. A relative of mine lived in a flat further down the road, the opposite direction from the main road. I never knew the track was there from when I visited. Last year, I went back there to find the track for the first time in decades. I found the entrance was clearly visible, a single lane wide with the entrance about four metres down the lane. Has the entrance been wide since the 80's? I recall entering the track via a pavement width path back in '86. Either my toddler memory is off or the entrance has changed. What is surprising in an area you think you know is what you come across if you walk your own area and look down tracks or pathways.I have seen many in my local area.As a child when you used to walk everywhere you knew every street by name and the shortest route to any street location you wanted. Many hidden places if you look for them. As a by note,on a video I watched on Leyton,. I was told that Temple Fields was once land owned by the Knights Templar.A chap with the surname Rogers does these interesting walk videos.

Like eca, I used to live close to the stadium in the 60's, it was the meeting place for local Inter Schools Sports Day. I walked along The Ingrebourne River bank across the fields to get their. My local Infant and Junior Schools was even closer than were I lived. loved playing in the river and nearby woods.

I wish we could play a friendly against a Premier league team
We used to, but havent for some time now
I cant see the point of playing friendlies against s***ty little non league teams.....there's no value in it, and the risk of injured players is always there

Now they’re all too busy flying around the world playing against teams in ‘new markets’ to generate income. No time to play your local lower league team these days. No money in it for them either.

My utter joy today is walking in such childhood places,I love river walks and have seen many Kingfishers. The closest I ever got to that bird was seeing one dive, bring up a fish bang it on a branch and swallow it.That was not a river,a stream that runs through Etheridge Road Rookwood Avenue and into the river Roding near the Bank of England printing works.A playground for lots of kids when it was being built.Had many mock gang battles there in days of yore.
