Perhaps we shouldn't read to much between the lines but I have to say Russ seems to be trying to put people in there place and exerting some sort of authority of his own! Good luck to him.

Will be very sad if things get derailed before they get started. Russ doesn't need any aggro and I don't think he will hang around for two minutes if the terms aren't right. It's not as if he can't get himself another job.

I think unless we're top 6 from the off, Russ will feel pressure.
And that's probably when Mauro Milanese will step in.

Having said that, none of these signings so far seem rushed. They all seem Russell signings.

Buying the players he wants is such an integral part of Russ (and most English managers, I'd imagine), the less likely it seems to be that Russ will stick about. I mean, if the sports director's role is to sign players, then you have the clash straightaway. And if his role is not to sign players, then what is it? He's not there to cook the pasta.
I wish to God I hadn't read that interview now. I don't think there's a hope in hell of that arrangement working.

I agree with you ramrod I personally don't see the point of this sporting director role Slade has proved to be a decent manager This is what Milanese has done in his post playing career On 16 June 2011, he was announced as new director of football of Serie B club Varese, days after predecessor Sean Sogliano accepted an offer from Serie A club Palermo.[8] What next Dearden to be promoted as Chief Treasurer I think this has the potential of been a ticking time bomb for Russ and the boys if they don't get out the blocks quickly

The Sporting Director post is a European model on the way football clubs are run. For me it don't work in British football, I can't see Slade taking orders. Interesting times ahead.

I think the whole point is that at the moment the role hasn't been clearly defined and that is what is worrying to Russ.
From the owners perspective, he wants someone in the club who he can talk to (and trust?), who can tell him whether or not the people Slade is bringing in, are good enough. The owner probably knows as much about football as anyone else on this board, so having a professional (Sporting Director) to advise him makes sense.
Problem comes when/if the Sporting Director disagrees with Slade, and a deal gets blocked. So who has the final say, if the Sporting Director can pick and bring players in off his own back and who negotiates the deals, are a few of the things which I guess need clarifying when this guy arrives. Just hope that we can show this system can work well in English football.

I'd have thought that Slade would be glad to get shot of the negotiating and financial side of things and of hanging on the phone all day with agents, and be left to just name the players he wants but, as mentioned, if the sports director starts interfering with the choice, that's when the problem will arise. And the problem can easily arise, as someone else said, if we get a few dud results. I wonder what sort of a fist of things Milanese made at Verona.

It worked well at Brentford just got to have a good manager in the first place which you have.If your new owner invests in new players I would expect Slade to be very happy.Mark Warburton reports to a sporting director who only joined after Rosler left Dispite him being at the club for 3 years.
