It looks like the club are playing a waiting game, hoping to pick up the left overs on the cheap

Yes I forgot that, his transfer fee was raised by selling Hector to the Posh ! Look back to the 70s and 80s and Os regularly paid out some large transfer fees, some over £100,000 ! Didn't Ian Bowyer cost £100,000,but we must have made a decent profit when he left the O's.I believe we got Paul Beesly for a few quid with the intention of selling him on. We paid £175k and sold for £375k.

We went spend crazy 1979 & 80 blowing much of our cup semi final profits on p.Taylor, day, bowles,Jennings and margerrison. All left for hardly anything.as well as an enormous wage bill.the money it all cost couldve put a roof on the south terrace and more.but was/is my own opinion.

Paul Beesley Centre Half, what a player he was !
Quote Wikipedia ''He began his career at Wigan Athletic in September 1984, before he was sold on to Leyton Orient for £175,000 in October 1989. He joined Sheffield United for £300,000 in July 1990 and was voted Player of the Year at the Premier League club in 1993''

You could see it the first game he played.

You could see it the first game he played. Wow what a good memory you have ! I just looked it up and Frank Clark was the Os manager who brought Paul Beesley in. Perhaps the reason that Beesley did not stay long was because he preferred playing for a club nearer to his Northern roots. Os made a substantial profit when he was sold to Sheffield United.

Most of the money was from sales - Roeder (£250k), Hoadley (£100k) after the cup run, then the following season Kitchen (£150k) and Grealish (£100k). This is where we got our money from. These figures are all from memory. I think Taylor was the main outgoing, £200k, Jennings was around £60k, Day(£100k), Bowles (£100k), Margerrison not much. Again from memory. As a schoolboy I used to write these things down, probably somewhere in the attic I will have this. I still have to pinch myself that we could afford these type of fees.

That's interesting, I am sure that the club quoted £375k at the time, an offer they could not refuse.

How we paid the wages of all those famous names of our 1978-80 history god only knows.I used to say if we signed Pele we'd still get 5500 gates. I'm totally convinced it was the state of the stadium..toilets etc that turned off fans.that's why we should've spent on that not big time charlie players.
