I would imagine our first choice targets have turned us down for whatever reasons and we've now had to rethink our options. They need to get a move on though

I have kept a list of those players we are reported to be interested in or that supporters think are a good buy. Here it is: 23 year-old Jack Nolan a winger who played for Accrington last year. He joined Gillingham. Joe Whitworth an inexperienced goalkeeper from Crystal Palace (he joined Exeter on loan) and Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo a 22-year-old who has been released by Arsenal ahead of the 2024/24 campaign. He joined Wrexham. Mikey Moore, Spurs youngster, playing for England U17's, 8 goals in 9 appearances. Dunfermline Athletic defender Josh Edwards. He joined Charlton. 29 year-old Jack Payne ex Charlton midfielder. He joined Cambridge. Callum Burton a goalkeeper, ex Plymouth. Has 78 apps in the last five years. He joined Wrexham. Sheffield Wednesday’s Tyreeq Bakinson. He joined Wycombe. Goalkeepers: Joe Wildsmith released from Derby He joined WBA. Jordan Archer back up goalkeeper at QPR is potentially a free agent this summer. He joined Portsmouth. Blondy Noukeu ex Southend loanee. Only played 13 senior games. Mo Eisa MK Dons Striker. Keenan Appiah-Forson Young West Ham CM, who spent last season on loan at Daggers. Dave Beacontree, centre back from Ware FC. We are paying 180k. From the TC9 site which is apparently notorious for getting rumours wrong: Barrow striker Emile Acquah for a fee in the region of £200k. Contract agreed, medical taking place now. That was weeks back. Ben Woodburn, 24 year old PNE midfielder. Middlesbrough defender Paddy McNair is 29. Caolan Boyd-Munce a defensive midfielder at St Mirren. A £175,000 bid was allegedly turned down. Can’t see us offering that sort of money nor bidding higher. Alfie McCalmont midfielder for Carlisle where he is still under contract. He moved to a club in Australia. Transfer window closes 30 August.

You appear to be saying that the slowness is all down to our side. What about ongoing negotiations by the player and his agent, the slowness of solicitors and their holidays? It’s not always in our control. Yet many other clubs from the Championship to the National League, faced with the same issues, seem to get by. That excuse just doesn’t stack up. you are also correct

I don’t think NT can help himself tbh. He is an O’s supporter in the truest sense and he has an extensive background in retail in the USA which for decades has been characterised by a combination of hype, hard sell and razzmatazz! The history of interventions go back to Embleton and the January transfer window in ‘21 when we were “ going for promotion”. He followed that up by sacking Embleton the following month. Similar situation with Jackett a year later and the infamous “ aggressive “ January transfer window after his things must improve type message. With the best will in the world the six players that were brought in then hardly stirred a great deal of enthusiasm and Brown is the only one who has established himself I’ve got a lot of time for Travis but sometimes he needs to throttle back on the sound bites.👍 Very true. I set my feelings against what the club say. Sometimes the promise of incoming numbers or quality falls short of the rhetoric. So whether it’s NT or RW, I now moderate my expectations based on past history. KJ was let down and as a consequence got fed up and wanted out. So when RW says we need 5 players and a solid preseason I hope he gets his wishes. But with 3 out and 3 in following 5 or 6 gone from last season we ain’t exactly going for it. But still time for preseason and Spain. I live in hope. I would just add that loans generally dont get decided until later in the pre-season window.

Yet two of our three, sorry 4, are loans and if you track player movements elsewhere there are numerous loan deals happening and have been for some time. Kelman and Perkins a prime example for us. Our first two signings. Always felt the week or so before Spain was our deadline and expected 3 of the 5 to come in by the time we go. 2 more later on. Loans or not, we need players. The first two months of the season are hectic.

The same applies I’m sure to every club in the EFL. We are not unique in that desire. Just some clubs are quicker than others.
