Going back to when I played, the main thing for me was comfort. I liked to have a shirt that was cool to wear, on the loose fitting side and prefer a slight V neck, I disliked tight round neck type of shirt. New colour looks nice and is a good option.

Did you ever have the baggy shirts with cuffs. The refs wore them with white cuffs and looked smart with the shirts giving them a proper official look.

Yes played in those type of shirts in the mid 1960s with a big loose shirt with large shirt type collars as well ! I think they were made of a linen type of material ? They were loose on me being as I was a small, skinny 15 year old, the only youngster playing in a mens team of mature large men. You were just tossed a shirt to wear and got on with it as best you could, wore my own socks, shorts and boots though. What a shock moving up into men football playing with that huge wet and muddy dubbin ball with large leather lace. Head that and it made my head ring and I could not kick it very far. So different to the light plastic coated balls of today.

you do realise those light plastic coated balls weight the same as those heavy laces balls? The weight and the pressure inside has not changed at all, the only thing that changed was the propensity to repel the water thus it not soaking in! My grandad said to me he used to have a laces mark on his forehead after heading that ball.

We was all skinny in those days despite all the fatty stuff.I used to buy Wate On tablets which were awful,I weighed ten stone until I was about 28 and started bulking up due to the job I did. Those balls were a danger if the lace or even the ball skidded across the forehead.I would go back if I had the chance though, and stay there.

Well they might have been when they were brand new but once used on in normal club football what with the rain and mud, they swelled up like medicine balls to kick and head ! I gave up playing when around 16 years old and started playing again in around 1970 and was surprised how much the balls had improved with the plastic coating ! also the later balls did not have the big leather laces on them covering the opening where the long rubber tube was folded over which was used to blow the ball up. Not an easy job to do like modern day balls, head the ball on your forehead against the lace and it marked your head or caused a cut head, horrible things. Also the old fashioned round toe football boots !

I used to weigh 9 stones until I was around 28 when I got married, I used to drink malt to try and gain weight and also used a ''bullworker''
Yes I also much preferred England in those happy days and motor bikes were my main love from around 16 till I was around 22 years old. Lastly at my local chippy, cod and chips was one shilling and three pence, all wrapped up in newspaper !

Those of us old enough can remember coating the ball with dubbin, the ball weighed more having soaked up the water. Not good. And I too can remember heading a ball lace side. Suffered a broken nose too, crap in the air. I still have somewhere the tool I used to re-lace a ball. Can also remember the bladder creeping out of a well used ball and them going out of shape.

When the ball bladder finally burst the stink was appalling.Nothing went to waste then so we played a type of football with half a bladder.
