I've been giving this Goalkeeping position some thought and I think i'd like to see Sam step up and get some games now. Let's roll with it until Xmas. Though we do still need a 3rd keeper if Noah is to go out on loan. I found this article from 2014, where the Guardian picked the best Academy players at the time. Sam was top of West Ham's academy and the brightest prospect. It's funny how perceptions change, because if we were able to sign West Ham's top academy prospect now, we'd be having babies all about it. Go on Sam! You're still only 26, a relative baby in Goalkeeping! www.theguardian.com/football/blog/ng-interactive/2014/oct/13/next-generation-2014-20-of-the-best-talents-at-premier-league-clubsClick the link, then click on West Ham.

I agree, Mungo. I there is not a first-class replacement for Sol available at a reasonable price, why not go with Howes? After a shaky start he looked ok in the few games he played at the start of last season, and he had a good game in the finale at Shrewsbury. I think the Os could do` worse than give him a run.

Though we do still need a 3rd keeper if Noah is to go out on loan. This is it for me. We need to sign a keeper anyway, so why get in someone we consider worse than what we've got? I think he's a good backup to have but from what I've seen I'd be extremely nervous about handing him half a season as our number 1. Let's not forget the window doesn't shut till September. He could get 4 or 5 competitive games to make his case before we need to sign someone.

RW hinted at a new keeper.
If tbe club was serious about Howes he would have got more game time at the end of last season in the nothing games. So my guess is despite being groomed for this season he has failed to impress behind the scenes. Tbh it’s not a position we can sod about with and saving a few pounds doesn’t help if we screw up at the back.
Let’s wait for Vigs next week.
Wage bill wise, ignoring loans, we have lost Thompson, Hunt, Soteriou, Sanders and Pigott (part). Replaced with DJ and Warrington. Must be room in there for a keeper!

Like a striker, a goalkeeper can come in for a lot of criticism because of the important positions they play. But this seem a good suggestion to me and I suppose RW may be giving it some thought.

Be interesting to see how he does in Spain too.

Howes had the opportunity to go to a full time National League Club before he joined us, he signed for us full well knowing he would be a bench warmer at League One level. He's a safe pair of hands to have as a temporary stand in but as with Ben Kilip at Barnsley he's not a starter.
Let's not mess around, there's plenty of good goalkeepers out there without a club

There’s really one sure way to determine if Howes is the man for the job and that of course, is to give him a chance. It’s a potentially risky strategy though if it doesn’t come off and the club has waited too long to bring in a suitable replacement.

Howes is nowhere near good enough for a league one club hoping to push for the playoffs.Good teams are built from the defence first and a good goalkeeper is vital and if we go with Howes we're in trouble

It’s a potentially risky strategy though if it doesn’t come off and the club has waited too long to bring in a suitable replacement. Why would you take that risk? If you wanted to go that way you would loan him out to a League Two club and let him prove it at a level lower. I think that a keeper is the one position we can wait on, in terms of tactics and learning the clubs system all a keeper needs to master is distribution, there's plenty of quality keepers out there we will get one.

I'm sure Sam can do all GK things that Richie wants from him, the only remaining question is ... Can he make saves in the way Sarge couldn't.

Be that dominant keeper that inspires the defence and gives them confidence. He will make saves and he will concede but his presence as a keeper is vital.
