Trouble is we have got him on loan now for the rest of the season and even IF we could send him back to his parent club, what to do then ?
Yes bit of a dilemma for RW. As you say, only two games in but if Hemming continues to make blatant errors then action will need to be taken.. Wonder if there is any financial penalty clause if you return a player early from a seasons long loan deal ?
Also where to get another good keeper with just over 2 weeks left to sign players ? e.g The EFL has today confirmed the opening and closing dates for the 2024/25 summer and winter transfer windows. The summer transfer window will open from 14 June 2024 and close on Friday 30 August 2024 at 11pm. The winter transfer window will open on 1 January 2025 and close on Monday 3 February 2025 at 11pm.

I find it difficult to imagine we will attempt send him back Den. It would be a massive loss of face to the transfer committee plus a bit of a knee jerk reaction imho. More likely we either (1) stick with him and hope he rides out the storm as it were or (2) Give Howes a chance or least likely of all (3) try to bring in someone on a 3 month loan and hope things have improved by December. Re loan windows I think there is still provision to get an emergency loan for a goalkeeper ( although that may be to cover for illness / injury)

After such a bad start, cant see how Hemming's is going to suddenly turn his game around. Wonder what the scouts saw in him to take him on loan. Been better off sending you down to watch him for a few games and give a verdict !!!

I’m in two minds over the Newport goal. Decent header downwards then bouncing upwards. Right for a forward, tricky for a keeper. You just have to read the shot better, had he done that it was definitely stoppable. But his movement made him look silly, indecisive.
I’ll give credit to the striker I think ill cut Hemming some slack. Surely he has to be a decent keeper just having a tricky start in league 1.

RW was very supportive of him after the Bolton defeat and evidently thought the performance untypical. He's a good judge and not one for calling geese swans so I'm hopeful Hemmings will turn out ok in the end. If not, Howes is certainly worth a run. I've always been a fan personally, but the gk coaches were presumably not entirely happy with him, so I'm probably being too optimistic.

RW is very supportive of his players and prefers to build confidence rather than destroy it. Can’t read too much into him being supportive other than a good man manager. He will keep his real feelings private. Quite right too.

On the bright side we've actually won a cup tie and are into the 2nd round. Our forwards are looking sharp and we might just draw west ham away

I do remember even John Jackson got off to a bad start with the O’s when he first came to the club. So much so, Ray Goddard was recalled to the starting line up by Petchey after a few games. Now that must have been a difficult decision , since Petchey staked a lot on bringing his old mate Jackson to the club to replace the very popular Goddard. That didn’t turn out so bad did it? Shame that neither of our current goalkeepers could hold a candle to Jacko or Ray!😕

The very fact it’s “ unexpected” adds to the problem I guess, as once the deal was agreed all the club’s emphasis/ resources have been geared towards outfield players. There’s certainly every chance Hemming will ride out the storm but goalkeepers in particular can only make a certain number of errors before those playing in front of them ( and the fans) start to get anxious.

I think it takes time to gel a defence and new keeper. Suspect it is case of nerves. I am sure at some time we have all felt that when starting a new job etc. The staff that worked for me were given an easy start and allowed to find their feet before too much pressure was out on them. I also appreciate that mistakes make you more uneasy. Hopefully over the next few weeks he will settle down and show what a good keeper he is. Also remember he has moved down here and that can be unsettling.

I think we should lay off our keeper. For sure. Damaging his confidence does no one any favours. But to say the goals we have conceded should not have happened is not having a go but stating a view. I’ve watched last nights goal several times and believe it was highly preventable. Tricky but stoppable at our level. Thus far we have concede 3 goals where he could and should have done better. it is a massive concern with some big games coming up.

Shame that neither of our current goalkeepers could hold a candle to Jacko or Ray!😕 I was remembering about that myself last night after the game e.g how John Jackson was so out of form when he first joined Leyton Orient, I did not remember though that Ray Goddard was recalled to the starting line up for a while. Being as dad used to drive in from a country area in Essex to Epping tube station to make the journey to the ground, we did not get to see all the games, perhaps saw around one third of the home games I guess ? Anyway my dad used to like Ray Goddard in Goal and was non too pleased at John coming in to take his place in goal. Eventually we were won over by John's improved form and consistent good displays. Anyway after having watched the goal Os conceded on the match highlight's, does not look to me as bad a mistake by the keeper as was said at the time. The ball was centered in from a free kick on the right side of the pitch, headed down into the ground by the Newport player so that the ball bounced into the very top of the keepers right hand side of the net, for myself, not as easy to save as many would think, anyway that is just my opinion.

Hemming seems to have not developed an understanding with our defence yet He's nervous.think Howes needs a run whilst hemming settles in the club and gets used to team mates. Its like Jackson back in the day,he took time.goalkeepers usually take longer We got our 25k worth with jacko after Malcolm Allison said he was too old !!

I must admit it was an odd looking goal and have never seen such a reaction from a keeper.Difficult to assess with just the one camera angle. However still 100% with him,saw many good things that we never had last season. 4-1 and I hardly gave a cheer,it was an odd experience,I was minded of a training session.
