Here is a short summary of Charlton.
Charlton Athletic
A club with a long history of poor owners which should have ended with the most recent incumbents SE7 Partners, who took over in June 2023 fronted by Charlie Methven, previously of “Sunderland till I die” fame. SE7 Partners are a subsidiary of Global Football Partners, a largely American based outfit comprised of some very wealthy people.

Charlton finished 16th in League 1 last season having had a poor start under Michael Appleton who was sacked in January 2024 and replaced by Nathan Jones, a heart on sleeve and foot in mouth person, who managed a 14-game unbeaten spell, albeit with 10 draws. Jones’s managerial career to date is peculiar in that he has had two very successful spells in charge of Luton Town and two very unsuccessful spells with Stoke and Southampton, respectively. To be fair, no one has got a tune out of Stoke in recent years. The fan base and the ownership will be expecting more this season challenging for a play-off place being the minimum expectation.
They have released fourteen players, and are willing to let more go. The most notable outgoing was Alfie May to Birmingham who scored 23 goals for Charlton out of 60 for the squad as a whole. They have also lost Corey Blackett-Taylor to Derby; the second top scorer with 8 and 6 assists. Matty Godden (from Coventry) and Gasson Ahadme (from Ipswich) have been brought in to play upfront. Godden has never been a prolific goal scorer, has played over 2,000 minutes just once in the last five years and, at 32, is past his peak. He hasn’t been in the squad for the first two games. Ahadme is a young (22 years old) player who scored 11 for Cambridge last year in 22 starts which was also the only time he has played regularly at this level, just under 2,000 minutes. They are backed up by Chuks Aneke, who struggled to get on the pitch last season and Daniel Kanu who is promising but only 19. Miles Leaburn is highly rated but out for the first half of the season.
There is one ex Orient player among the incoming: Alex Mitchell who played 26 games back in 21-22 and was a regular starter for Lincoln last season. The other notable pick up is Luke Berry from Luton Town who has Premiership and Championship pedigree. The last time he completed over 2,000 minutes in a season was back in 2017-18.
Defence is marshalled by club captain Lloyd Jones, supported by Macauley Gillesphey and Alex Mitchell. Left wing back is Joe Edwards, down from Scotland who was pursued by a number of clubs.
The midfield three will probably be the club captain, Greg Docherty, Luke Berry and Conor Coventry. Docherty and Berry have loads of experience at higher levels, while Coventry is trying to kickstart his career, having not made the grade at West Ham. In reserve is 19-year-old Jamaican international, Karoy Anderson.
The preferred formation is 5-3-2, with the emphasis on a sound defence. Achieved a good win away to Wigan, 1-0, on the opening weekend, followed by a 0-1 loss to Birmingham in the Carabao Cup. Averaged 36% possession across the two games, while allowing 29 shots and committing loads more fouls than their opponents.
There is going to be a lot of pressure on this squad as the owners want promotion soon, as do the fans. There is pressure on Nathan Jones to show he can create a winning team outside of Luton, which is no doubt why he has brought in players like Luke Berry, who he worked with at Luton. The squad has numerous players with experience of playing at a higher level but there must be doubts about how much some of them will play over the year. It also looks light in goal scoring unless Ahadme is the real deal and Godden finds his form of five years ago.
