A view about the dicking about at the back. When we watch Spanish teams, each player is so skilled with ball at his feet, it's a once per season rarity that a high press will get it off him. How can the Spanish be so darn good at the individual level? I now live in Spain and was at hotel for a short break whilst we had the builders in to wrecked our house ! At our hotel we overlooked a big sport centre with loads of pitches. Seven days a week from early in the morning to late at night (school holidays) the kids and teenagers were out on the pitches training (didn’t see many actual matches played) they seemed to spend most of their time running and passing, walking and passing, standing and passing and being harassed and tackled and trying to pass. It must be so ingrained that it becomes second nature. I reckon most of our kids would get bored doing this. I thought it must be something along those lines, it's almost pointless pressing them. As an extension to that, Spanish defenders get to practice dealing with such players and are so much the better for it. The way ahead is clear enough.

England beat Ireland 2-0 in Lee Carsley's first match as interim manager with goals from ex Ireland Internationals Declan Rice and Jack Grealish. It was the first English victory on Irish soil in 60 years.

I read somewhere Jimmy Greaves attributed his ball skills as well as having a natural talent, having to play football at school in the playground using a tennis ball. The school banned normal sized footballs at break time.

The school banned normal sized footballs at break time. I have been saying this for years. Did it myself when at school in the morning and dinner breaks and playing with a tennis ball taught you to get over the ball when taking shots at goal. Also helped your dribbling skills so much. Where I lived in the countryside, miles away from where I went to school, there were few children in the district I lived in, houses were few and far apart so from around the age of 9 years old I was football mad and spent much time on my own and next door to our house there was a deserted school and I used to spend hours there, playing on my own kicking a tennis ball against a wall doing various training routines, left foot right foot kicking the ball with one touch as soon as it reached me. Made me a two footed player with good ball control and made one touch football passing come naturally. also made me kick the ball accurately when shooting for goal. Remember how Bobby Charlton used to get right over the ball and hit the ball hard, low and on target. All down to non stop practice and I bet he also played with a tennis ball as a kid ! From the age of around 9 years old I used to cycle to school on my own, around 5 miles there, 5 miles back on mainly semi deserted country lanes. When you lived in the countryside like I did, well it seemed like a normal thing to do in the mid 1950s. and early 1960s. I played for my school team and from around 11 years old, I was made Captain and once I got to around 13 years old I got to know about a youth team in my area so started playing for them and did very well and after a while was made captain of that team as well ! Even in those days I was very vocal on the pitch and very committed to winning !

Three brothers to play three and in with a tennis ball in a tight space.Never got anywhere near good, just the passino and love of sport.I did get into the schools cricket and Gymnastics team.

As a youth my best sport was always football. Liked cricket but not that good at batting or bowling. I was good at table tennis and ok at tennis. No good at snooker also did fishing. In those times at school we never got any coaching for sports and unlike now, there was no local youth soccer league. I was self taught in all sports. So many youngsters now too addicted to internet games to find time or motivation to play active sports. Nice to hear that you enjoyed playing your different sports when you were younger.
