Watching Reading vs Bristol Rovers. How the feck are these two higher in the table than us? Poor. Forde a couple of half decent moments but great, Soteriou anonymous. Exciting last few minutes. The commentary trying their best to make it sound exciting. Easily pleased I guess. Reading though should be winning, Rovers yet to have a shot on target.

Watching Mansfield vs Birmingham.
Why do players who commit really obvious fouls feel it’s necessary to confront the referee and complain. Happened in the Reading game, just happened in the Mansfield game.

No surprise there Shaq 2 fouls, both yellows, in two minutes, so off. Stupid. The body language from the Rovers players has been poor. Spent a shedload of money and not that great.

Mansfield late defending as the onslaught grew was superb. Birmingham were the better team and some of their passing a class above. But fair play to Mansfield , they fought hard. How that free kick went in was poor defending. Don’t agree that Mansfield made Birmingham look ordinary, they defended well but Birmingham by some margin the better team.

Little doubt Brum had the superior players but they were unsettled by Mansfield and the “ up and at ‘em” approach in the second half I thought. A well deserved point for the Stags imho.

Just goes to show what a team costing significantly less than their opponents can do when they get stuck in. Have to admit I was hoping for the same approach from our guys against Wycombe. Not so as it turns out.

That's where the likes of Pratts is invaluable in counteracting the verbal intimidation that must go on. Idoubt it's as bad as the late 50's where Dinosaur full backs would get crunching tackles from behind on wingers just to scare them and slow them down. Reminds me of the Publican of the Bell in Rainham who played for the Hammers on the wing in this era. He said nearly every game the Full back would wisper in his ear I'm going to break both of your legs. Of course the Puritans of the game will scoff at this at say it didn't happen.

Intimidation, both verbal and physical has been and I’m sure will always be part of the game. I would just pass on a story concerning Bert “ Elbows” Howe -the O’s full back from the late 60’s - that was related by John Docherty the former Millwall manager. Docherty was playing as a winger for Reading at the time but was out because of injury. His replacement was a young fellow Scot who was making only his second or third appearance and asked nervously Docherty what was the best way to play Howe. “ From about five yards away!” was Docherty’s reply!😆👍
