Just watched my local sides, tier 10 and 12 contest a cup game. How refreshing to see wide players take on their man. How nice to see teams eager to put a ball into the box, amazingly how dead-ball takers actually manage to drop the ball in the danger area and finally watch sides attack with pace.
Ok the skills gap between the two was clear. 5-0 at half time, could have been more. But decent skills on display.
Cold Tuesday night the car park packed, maybe 400+ cars. Lanes outside full of cars parked on the verge. Maybe over 1200 people turned up enjoying the game, the bar and the food, the action.
Second half not to the same standard, one side knowing it was game over, the other not wanting to be embarrassed. So I left before getting stranded trying to exit the car park. All for £4. Bargain.

Just read an article in the online version of the DT about Arsenal and the need to sign 8 year old kids into the academy for that age.In my opinion they stop being children at that age once signed. Many comments for and against, most fors probably from Arsenal fans.

I’m pretty cool with the idea that parents assess the risks and benefits of letting their children get involved. Plenty of young kids get involved in football at that age, just because it’s organised doesn’t mean they lose out on spending time with new mates, going to school, do their homework, play games etc. I was out playing football at that age all the time. Just over fields with jumpers for goal posts and tatty balls. Footballs that is.

Notice Juventud de Torremolinos are in action tonight, first round of the Copa del Rey.
That practice match against us must have brought them on a bit.

Seems like they give home advantage to the lower league side, which is an interesting idea.

The comments also said that some get rejected at 10 and lose the love of the game.Parents see £ signs and the childs academic teaching subsides when signing. It is a cruel world in football and I am neither against what the clubs like Arsenal are doing or for it.Football as we know is not a sport at that level but a very successful business with a few exceptions.Just take a look at how many at the O's do not sign full professional contracts,Ling and others have the awful task of telling them they have nothing to offer the club.Imagine that at 19 after being with a club since you were 8.

When I was not going to O's games I used to watch my local team Aveley. 50 years later they're still going strong. Which is nice.

All EFL teams are now infected with the style taught at the academies. I noticed recently at Hornchurch that neither side were pressing. I assume they haven't the ability/ stamina to do it. But it makes for a more entertaining game!

Knew a lad who played for Aveley, never visited their ground.Still love non league football and have Redbridge and Woodford Town nearby.Tuesdays Wednesdays and Saturdays would more than often find me watching a non league game.Only the wretched knees stops me going now.Somewhere I have a programme for the England v Spain amateur international played at Dulwich Hamlets ground in Dog kennel hill. All these games I attended on my own.

I watch Maldon and Tiptree a few games a season ( yes both of them 😉) and I find I don’t have to be quite so involved in supporting them ,so pressure off no travelling ,no parking !

Competitive as well. 5 minute drive, usually easy parking, food and drink if wanted, close to the action, cheap. Enjoyable mostly. Like all games, not everyone is great but that’s to be expected. As you day, facets of the game at that level are different. No bad thing sometimes.

You can also hear what the linesman say to the players and players to linesman.Whilst watching Ilford at Glynn Road,I saw one of the Morgan twins toss a ball back to the linesman,it hit the lino on top of his head and the player was sent off.At the same ground I saw the ball land on one of the spiked railings that stopped you bunking into the seated stand,it burst the ball much to everyone's mirth. How I long for the freezing Tuesday nights.

Just read an article in the online version of the DT about Arsenal and the need to sign 8 year old kids into the academy for that age.In my opinion they stop being children at that age once signed. Many comments for and against, most fors probably from Arsenal fans. There are two schools of thought. 1) get them in the professional academy early so they will benefit from professional coaching. In the long term they don't develop bad habits, they learn from a consistent message and routines. I have heard of 6 year olds, which is shocking. 2) these kids are too young, let them develop more naturally without the rigid structure of a pro club. 6,8,10 are all probably too young, from both a mental and physical perspective. Then there is rejection, how does an 8 year handle that? 18 year olds struggle with rejection, and how many times will they face it? Anyway who is trying to benefit? The kid or the dad? I see so many dad's deluded beliefs that their kid is the next Beckham. 1 in 10,000 get to a pro club at some point, 1 in 100,000 boys make it as a pro, the odds are stacked against you to start with. I was speaking to a senior pro in a championship side about this and his view was "we should not be taking kids that young, it's not right and I persoanlly wouldn’t let my kid go into that environment that young as its brutal"
