Went to see the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in Southampton on Sunday, their take on Pink Floyd. Couple of things struck me. The first being just how good it is to listen to a full Orchestra playing. What a bunch of fantastic musicians. The second being it’s the first time I saw a conductor in action close up and they do far more than wave their arms and the baton. They really bring together talented musicians into a single superb team.
What also struck me, and a bit controversial here, was the quality of the music created by (sort of, they are old like me) modern day bands when their music is played to its full potential by an orchestra. I do wonder if we don’t give modern day musicians the credit they deserve. Certainly on a par, in my opinion, with some of the older classical composers whose music only really comes alive when played in this way.
just Cannot wait to hear them do Queen in July.
As an aside, also lists of who is the best guitarist doing the rounds, Clapton, Hendrix, etc. well folks forget it. The lead guitarist of the BSO has a talent way beyond these guys. To hear is to believe. The real talent rarely gets a look in.
