Surprised this particular can of worms hadn't shown up here recently.....
Should he be allowed to resume his career as a footballer - given that acting as a role model is part and parcel of that job?
If not, are there any circumstances where you could see him managing to re-enter the game (at any level) and be accepted?
After 2½ years tucked up, will he be in a physical condition to even contemplate resuming his career as a footballer? Assuming you were manager of a struggling club, and that Evens had proved himself to be as fit as he was pre-jail, how tempting would it be to try to sign him?
Personally, I don't see how he can resume his career while he strenuously maintains his innocence. He was found guilty, an appeal was rejected. Even if he does suddenly do an about-face and hold up his hands to what happened, I think rape is one of those crimes that can't be looked past.
Of course sometimes there are mistakes made in the legal system, but in the eyes of the law he is a convicted rapist - no matter what he claims.
Even with a complete public display of contrition, I don't see how a professional football club could ever dream of signing him as a player and presenting him as an example of someone who youngsters would wish to emulate.....Plus the headaches that it could cause with various club sponsors etc
Backroom staff position, maybe, but unless new evidence comes to light to totally clear him of his conviction, I think his days at the sharp end of football are over.
There have been quite a few players that have had a brush with the law over the years and managed to successfully revive or start their careers in football, but when the crime in question is rape, then it's a completely different level. Just my opinion.
