Happy birthday Dick Van Dyke, age 97 today. He has repeatedly apologized for what he deemed his atrocious attempt at a cockney accent in Mary Poppins and from all accounts he’s a genuinely good person.
From the Guardian a few years ago: ““People in the UK love to rib me about my accent, I will never live it down,” he said. “They ask what part of England I was meant to be from and I say it was a little shire in the north where most of the people were from Ohio.” He also said he was completely unaware during the shoot that anything was wrong with his attempted cockney accent. “I was working with an entire English cast and nobody said a word, not Julie [Andrews], not anybody said I needed to work on it so I thought I was alright.””

How did he get on with his alcohol problems? That was significant for him some years ago.

I believe he stopped drinking years ago. I was too young to watch the Dick Cavett show live but I’ve seen an interview with him on that show talking about his acceptance of his alcoholism and how he dealt with it. It seemed like he just accepted it and worked every day and eventually lost the desire for it. I saw a more recent interview with him not too long ago where he talked about it and how he helped others with that problem and was talking about his work out regimen in his mid 90’s. Neat person.

The brillantly caustic satirist and broadcaster, Victor Lewis-Smith, has sadly died at 65. His TV reviews in the Standard in the 90s were must reads.
RIP.

Satirists and broadcasters are rare these days, always a favourite use of English for me.There was a Labour MP who had a very caustic line in put downs.I know he was jewish and had a bald head, annoyed I cannot think of his name much to my chagrin.

Always liked him but that cockney accent though. Gawd blimey Marry Parppens. Classic! "it was a little shire in the north where most of the people were from Ohio.” Good answer, and very funny.

Back in the day Ford's looked after their workers, one way was to take their workers kids to a day out. I was invited along. It was a great day out we saw the original Mary Poppins film. I thought it was great film and received a great Christmas present as well.It shouldn't be DIck Van Dyke apologising for his accent it should be the films accent voice coaches who failed in their job.

I have several family members who have lived past one hundred years old. Two of my great aunts still drove cars at 102. (They often said it was because neither of them ever married that they kept their wits. Haha). Many other relatives also lived well into their nineties. All had a common characteristic. They didn’t take much very seriously and laughed a lot. I have to think Dick Van Dyke is in that category.

OSC positivity inside your head I am convinced will help you in all manner of ways through life, some of which I’m sure helped your relatives reach such grand old ages. I also see in the British press when they interview someone who reaches 100 what’s the secret and they all invariably say a glass of …….alcohol different types for different people, again I’m sure that helps as well as they all do it!

f***ing hell, Terry Hall of the Specials has passed away aged 63 after a brief illness. The man was one of the sound tracks of my youth and life. I was privileged to see them perform at the 100 club and at Hyde Park. Proper sad news, a legend of music has gone way too soon.

In Italy where a lot of people seem to live long lives they usually say it's because of wine or olive oil. Probably low stress, diet, and having family around helps too. I'd better stop using olive oil, I don't wanna live that long. What's OSC?
