Orient manager Ross Embleton had said before Saturday's match that a 'number of people (were) suffering with illnesses'.
He insisted at the time it was 'not a Covid issue' and claimed after the game that up to 'nine players' were instead struggling with a 'bug'.
heh!
Not quite sure what your point is ? If, as I understand it the virus can be transmitted “ silently” e.g. people are often infectious prior to symptoms developing , while some do not develop any symptoms at all, It’s a bit unfair to dig out Embleton. Like everyone else, I assume he is being led by the so- called “science”.

Leyton Orient owner Nigel Travis has spoken to Jim White and Simon Jordan on TalkSport in the past hour and confirmed that the match is all but off. He has also criticised the Government for its lack of support for lower league clubs. Some bird on TV today saying the Government should do more for actors. Everybody defending their corner, more should be done for their pet personal interests, understandable. But maybe the priority should be doing something for the thousands of people who have lost their jobs, or still likely too, and their livelihoods. And protecting the people who are dying. The lower leagues. Get some fecking perspective. i love football and I love Orient but in the current climate there are more important things. People are dying for goodness sake. Suicides are up, Cancer is going untreated, domestic violence is escalating. But hey, let’s give support to lower league football and help out rich owners. Apparently the premier league want a 1.5 billion handout. Really?

Red now green font, I was the same at school different colours in ink to seek attention, but of course I am sure you have other reasons. Just saying about my childhood and how we relate to others.

No "maybe" about it, if anyone starts feeling unwell the first thing to consider should be Covid. When I allegedly had it feeling sick and nearly throwing up was one of my symptoms. Bit extra: The year before I'd had the Flu and it didn't take me long to realise it was the Flu. This year I just didn't know what was going on, it was all a bit weird. At it's peak the Flu was worse but overall Covid was a lot scarier.

And no-one would have wanted to believe that flu-like symptoms meant COVID because of the implications. The medical staff should have been the ones to blow the whistle, though, you would have thought.

At my daughters school a number of children and teachers are unwell. Flu, Covid, bug or whatever. No one knows. But as a precaution they are keeping away from others.
Is this an over-reaction or a sensible precaution? my opinion is the latter. We all knew this type of situation would happen.
In these difficult times in my opinion it beggars belief that those responsible for the well being of Orient staff and players did not adopt a safety first approach before the Mansfield game. I’d sooner be accused of being over cautious than irresponsible. Firmly putting the well-being of people before fixtures and TV money. The club in this instances have not lived up to their hype about people first.
To my mind Orient have demonstrated a scandalous disregard not only for our staff but that of another club. If in doubt, do the safest thing. It’s an easy stance to defend.

NHS guidelines say in ‘most’ cases that the main symptoms are cough, high temperature or loss of smell. We know that fit individuals can be asymptomatic and although individuals were feeling under the weather, I got the impression from hearing Ross’ comments that it was some form of tummy bug. If businesses are closed down because one person is ill, (wether with Covid or not until they get a test confirmed), then supermarkets would be closing left right and centre. We need to protect the old and vulnerable, but people need to try and get on with life, minimising the risks as much as possible in their contact with friends and family, because even with a vaccine this thing is not going away and it will be part of the hazards of life, much as the flu is now. I know, it’s all a bit depressing, but so is shutting up shop and mass unemployment.

Speaking as a septua.... septi... sep .... I'm 70! ...and until recent years, a life-long smoker, this puts me bang in the middle of the "at risk" group. I feel I must face up to the fact that life has changed and changed for ever (practically). So I try to learn the lessons of history, this forms my view:
1. Infectious diseases like the bubonic plague, black death and Spanish flu have arrived from time to time and killed a lot of people. Without the means to fight any of them, those who survived had the genetic predisposition to fight off the disease, those who didn't, died. Evolution then saw to it that only those with in-built protection survived and they formed 99% of the people we have today.
2. Other infectious diseases like Polio, diptheria, leprosy and smallpox were defeated by human ingenuity via social action, vaccination and immunology. AIDs, malaria and others affect poor people so it seems the will to fix them is somewhat lacking.
3. We continue to suffer common colds which arrive in regular mutations and influenza (Ebola and others in other climates) and we know we can treat them but not prevent nor cure them, we rely on our own immunity to deal with them. It is my understanding that SARS , MERS and Covid-19 are in this group, at least for the time being. It follows that human ingenuity will either defeat one or more of them - or it won't. In the meantime, Covid-19 will kill those of us who are ill-equipped to fight it off and the rest of society will get on with life with the acceptance there's now another flu-like bug which may get you from time to time. How much is done in a pretty much futile attempt to save us old'ns is the subject of much debate. Like Osoldguy says: Why would the young ruin their futures by stopping trade, work and commerce just to hang on to us a bit longer?

Right from the start I have always tried to be sensible and that didn't mean cutting myself off from society. If someone was too close I moved or asked them to move. People will have to learn that they should be responsible for their own actions until we find an answer to this virus.

I know, it’s all a bit depressing, but so is shutting up shop and mass unemployment. We heard from Ross it was a tummy bug affecting 9 or so people. A few days later we hear between 12 and 18 players tested positive. Coincidence, possibly. Mass tummy bugs followed by mass Covid. Hmm,. its not about closing businesses because of one person. My daughters school for example continues as new-normal with the majority of teachers and pupils doing lessons. Only those with symptoms of a bug, cold, virus or whatever are away. when you have a squad with 9 of 23 suffering from a bug, it’s time to take note. No matter what the cause, it’s not good to risk others playing what is a close contact sport. Just look at the congestion at corners! It’s just not sensible. It’s just not nice. With Covid it’s just madness. i honestly believe had we not been looking forward to a lucrative TV game the club may well have taken a different, more cautious route. It’s about Money.

Its very easy to be critical of the club (on here and elsewhere) but we know next to nothing about the detail here.
I presume that the agreement between Spurs and Orient for the O's team to be tested was in place before the Mansfield game. The conversations would have been had, even if the detail had not been thrashed out. If any staff had any symptoms suggesting any possibility of Covid, I am sure the club would have taken appropriate action. For the greater good, to protect our friends at Spurs, and to give Tuesday's game the best possible chance of going ahead.
The symptoms of Covid are very distinct from those of a tummy bug.
I note that Hull declined West Ham's offer to pay for tests for their players (bit ironic as it's turned out). I wonder how many other EFL clubs with Premier League opponents have declined testing?

I note that Hull declined West Ham's offer to pay for tests for their players (bit ironic as it's turned out). I wonder how many other EFL clubs with Premier League opponents have declined testing? I’ve no issue with who paid for what. Nor am I that sure how Covid symptoms are that different from all sorts of other virus’s going round. One of the issues with Covid is that some symptoms are hard to identify early on. Can take two weeks. Therefore without a test there is no way the club could rule out Covid. None at all. And that proved to be the case. Caution is the key when so many players are sick. At my daughters school people are off, not because they have Covid but they are unwell, therefore are not taking chances at all. They don’t want to risk others in their work place. Covid adds another layer of concern. So a school can adopt a safety first approach but not a football club. if Orient have 9 players suffering for a bug, then its unwise for the game to go ahead anyway. Especially in times of heightened need for caution. Stop the game, get the players sorted, rearrange the fixture sometime later. No big deal. I’m sure the EFL would not have kicked off. Safety first. If it turns out to be nothing but a bug, fantastic. Due diligence. imagine no game with Spurs. Our players would be infecting other clubs over the next 14 days before the Covid penny dropped. Those clubs infecting other etc. etc. Why? Because we had 9 sick players and assumed it was a tummy bug. we wonder why numbers of Covid cases are going up.

No Stags players infected. The 2 metres, 15 minutes idea seems to be holding up.. good news.

When did they first notice their symptoms? The club need to stop obfuscating over this issue.
