A mighty cheer for Essex county cricket club who won the Bob Willis trophy.A substitute for the county championship. The county certainly has some players of merit, and has produced many England players and captains.Be an Essex man,be proud.

Good to read. County Cricket never did did get many in the way of fans at the grounds so, I guess, the current restrictions are of a lesser import than they are to football clubs?

Well done Essex. Live in Hampshire now and (used to) go to the Ageas Bowl for my cricket fix. But I will always be Essex. Top team.

Some decent crowds at county cricket matches,a wonderful way to spend a day in summer. If you swallow and watch sport, the place to be. For the very special day out on a sporting occasion,go to Lord's the cathederal of cricket. You will not be dissapointed.Costs a bit but worth it.

Fantastic. I usually follow Essex Cricket but not this season. Going back a bit now but Graham Napier with all those sixes. I'll never forget that.

He looked like the archetypal farmer, incredibly muscular with a rosy red face. What a wonderful powerful player he was. Did you ever see David East the always having a laugh spin bowler?

But in the great scheme of things I’ll enjoy it hopefully next year, football too.

I hear the Ageas Bowl is out of town and difficult to get to.Is that correct. It is a big ground and there has been some great cricket played there.A ground I must visit before I shoot through.

The name rings a bell and I definitely remember someone matching the description you've given, but not that well. Other than watching them over Valentines Park once I only started watching them (on SKY) from the Graham Napier era. I dropped SKYSPORTS a few years ago so I'm a bit out of touch now. In the days where all ref's looked old I remember one over Orient in the 60's or 70's who was always smiling. We called him smiler.

Pity about the moron spraying alcohol on the muslim player. Heat of the moment celebration. No insult was intended. Apology made. Move on.

There are enough precedents in this situation for all professional sportsmen to be aware. The player concerned should be sacked, or worse, made to play for Somerset next season.

Pleased to be corrected Timmo.Did you see Ray East play,he was a joy to watch and an excellent spin bowler.Essex have been blessed with quite a few .I used to love it when it was Ilford cricket week, and Leyton.Finished work early to watch those games.

For big games they open up a field for parking about 5 minutes walk away. Massive area, plenty of space. £10 to park so pricy but convenient. They also operate a park and ride scheme for some games, easy parking and 15 minutes on a bus and generally very well organised. Never been using public transport.

I did see Ray East play and as you say he was great fun. He was a far better bowler than people gave him credit for and he took loads of wickets. He should have played Test Cricket in my opinion. I played against David East on several occasions in the early eighties when he turned out for Ilford Ist XI. He was the first wicket keeper I saw wear proper wicket keeping pads that didn't go above the knee. Up until then even the Ist class keepers wore ordinary batsman's pads that were really cumbersome. He lived near me in Clapton and would drop me off after a game sometimes. Good keeper too.

I agree with you,but wasn't deadly Derek around at the same time. Yes he was but on the wickets they played on in those days he could easily have been a second spinner. I'm sure he would have got a look in if he had played all his cricket at Lord's for example!

Just been looking at a book I have on Essex cricket club,Rays best figures were 15-115 at Leyton in 1969.Great photo in the book of Ray up a ladder painting the ground pre-season.It says what a fun player he was,if I am able I will try and put the photo on this thread. I did enjoy reading the book and seeing some statistics of players we have had.I did look to see if they have had a player with my name, but the answer was in the negative. It is an old book Essex county cricket club and the game have moved on since then.
