I watch the Big Match and an awful lot of pitches from that 1975 -1990 era we’re just as bad but I’ve watched players like Moore and Mullery ,Waller etc doing a wonderful job ,amazing .

The days when the sand on the dry pitch would blow onto the terracing on windy days.

Those were the days when we played in mud, snow, ice and even fog. Leather balls that weighed a ton, tackles flying in but nobody rolling about as if they had been shot, no wrestling at set pieces or pulling shirts. No substitutes or extra time, goalkeepers allowed to pick up back passes , forwards allowed to Harass the keeper and try to stop him kicking out. Linesmen actually retrieving the ball and giving it to the player taking a throw in. No segregation of rival supporters. Very strange to see a game with not a single black player. I was at that game but for some reason thought it ended 2 all. Watching it now , what a good game joe Elwood had, and that was never a penalty it was shoulder to shoulder.

Because we had no way of recording tv.I recorded Arsenal v Orient FA cup semi-final on The Big Match on my cassette recorder.I still have it,and John Arlott's last test match commentary.Sometimes working in the garage I play both.Must admit I like the test match commentary the most.

It's a far cry from small boys in the park, jumpers for goalposts. Isn't it? Mmmmm marvellous. (Ron Manager - Fast Show)

When coloured television started,Punch magazine had a cartoon with the commentator saying "Hawke russet tanned against an azure sky, comes in,bowls, his foot marks score raw umber divots in the emerald green turf.Kept it in my wallet for years till it turned to dust.
