How can the ref send the wrong player off in this day and age of technology, in front of the camera's and millions of people when it is so clear!!!!

Apparently Oxlade Chamberlain went up to the ref and said, 'it was me ref' Marriner replied, 'go away Theo Walcott or I'll book you too'.

To be fair I can understand a ref making this mistake but what I cannot accept is the assistants, including the 4th one, not putting the matter right. Bring on televised decisions as with rugby. It's got to come and the sooner the better.

wasn't a sending off offense anyway!! Why? The only reason could be that the ball was not going in the goal.

wasn't a sending off offense anyway!! Really? An outfield player can dive full length and save with his hand and it is not red card offence?

Does it make a difference if the ball was going wide ?

Does it make a difference if the ball was going wide ? No. Oxlade Chamberlain, Gibbs and possibly Czenesy should all have gone and Arsenal should have faced a points deduction and relegation to League One. Just my humble opinion though.

Does it make a difference if the ball was going wide ? I don't know but thought the rule something about the last man fouls before a goal scoring chance?

There have been worse cases of mistaken identity: this guy was once sent off for a foul committed by Brian Saah.

But Oxlade Chamberlain didn't know it was going wide so he should have been red carded.

Poor ref has been hung out to dry. It was just a mistake, simple as that.
Dish out the right punishment to the right player, rescind the other, draw a line under it. Move on.

Rules drawn up by world governing body Fifa state a player should only be shown a red card for handball if "the unacceptable and unfair intervention prevented a goal being scored". The rules make no mention of a player's intent when handling the ball. Both players and ref escape bans after card rescinded

Agree but there are mistakes and momentous blunders which this was, dont really see any excuse whatsoever. It seemed the only thing he knew was that it was a black Arsenal player. Yes you can argue that the linesman should have picked up on it but the ultimate responsibilty lies with the referee. Oxlaid Chamberlain could have gone on to score the winning goal (unlikely as it turned out!)

I thought the ref was unsighted and made the decision on information supplied by the linesman, if so the lino is keeping quiet.
