Don't get the clamour for May to be honest.
Much prefer Ruel. He's one of our own, plenty of time to develop, and is clearly getting better.
Alfie May is 30 years old, overpriced at £300k, tiny, and has absolutely no resell value.

Giving it some more thought I'd even go as far as to say that if that is what £300k gets you (not just talking about May here), I'd rather that we bide our time with our youth players like Pegrum, and whoever else is coming through.

Alfie May is 30 years old, overpriced at £300k, tiny, and has absolutely no resell value. If the primary objective is to bring on young players and sell on then Alfie May has long since past that stage. Ruel is clearly a better prospect who is having a good season, probably his best to date, and may well be off when his contract runs out. Or before for a fee plus future add-ons. Good business. May is a different kettle of fish. If you want a goal scorer, and his record in league 1 is excellent, 80+ goals in 180 games, on a two year deal to push for promotion then May is a far better bet. May gets goals (11 in 14 for a struggling Charlton team). I’ve seen him a few times and he is good. Clamour? Look at his record whilst at a very average club. So who is better? The answer is it depends on the overall club objectives. Raise money = Ruel. Proven goal scorer = May. But I doubt our budget runs to the sort of money he costs nor does he fit our plans. I hope Joe Pigott will find the scoring touch he had a couple of years ago. Rated him too at the time.

I think the answer is a bit of both. We are bringing through some good players and sold Ogie. Happe too will attract offers I’m sure and be off. Sotiriou too maybe. Combine that with experience. But to rely on youth alone is not a solution.

The new owners of Charmton didn't want May as he has no resale value. He may be good value if he fires them to promotion though I'd have thought. He is not on that much money either from what I'm told, certainly a lot less than the 10k I thought he be good for.

Didn't look that interested. Probably wanted to be in doors watching Strictly with his slippers on.⚽️

That was embarrassing from Charlton. A lot of the PM boys probably were with the local Pro clubs as youngsters. Some Dullard on the coaching staff showed them the door, knocking the stuffing out of them. You look around London with the amount of high level non league clubs and the wastage of young talent shown the door before they were out of short trousers, by Pro clubs and their Academies.

That was embarrassing from Charlton. But well done CVPM 👍🏾 absolutely and that there is the true magic of the cup, no other competition can have 2 teams separated by 117 league places and be held to a draw and earn a reply.

Teams take on a lot of kids and select those they feel can make it The ones let go are not bad players, just generally not as good as those who stay. Though I’m sure errors of judgement happen both ways. You have to be surprisingly good to make it in the pro game, even semi-pro. Coaches need to make a call on ability and attitude. Of course they get it wrong sometimes but my guess is they get it right more often than not. one off games like this produce fluke results. But generally speaking from teams who would not survive the rigours of a full professional season in the league. They are one-off performances. Why cup games like this are interesting.

Well done Alfie May!! He is a proven goal scorer and going by modern day football transfer fees, a bargain buy for Charlton at only £300,000 !!

We can't compete with any of this. Definitely a tough time ahead I agree, it's becoming increasingly hard for the smaller outfits at any level now. Clubs like us and others such as Cambridge just can't compete with this level of spending.

Reading back on my views re Ruel and May on this thread, Right about Ruel (for those who seem to think I had a downer on him, shows I believe what a good prospect he is) and May. Proven goal scorer but if Charlton make money on him then I got that wrong.

Proven goal scorer but if Charlton make money on him then I got that wrong. Would be interesting to know if Charlton considered turning a profit on him or whether they just lucked out on a big club getting relegated and happily paying over the odds for him. Do you think a club would've paid good money for Ruel this summer if we'd extended his contract earlier?
